• Cocktails are an essential part of any holiday. What could be better than relaxing on the beach with a Mojito or Strawberry Daiquiri in hand? In honour of this poolside staple, we’re bringing you a cocktail recipe every month. This month, it’s the Piña Colada…

Just the smell of this creamy, coconut-infused drink will transport you to tropical shores.

In Spanish, piña means “pineapple” and colada means “strained” – so you can guess the staple ingredient of this classic holiday concoction. The fresher the pineapple – the better the flavour, so make sure you use the freshest juice or, even better, drink it from a hollowed-out pineapple. And use Havana Club or Jamaican rum to give this drink a Caribbean twist.

The second best thing about Piña Coladas, besides the taste, is that you can dress them up in all kinds of umbrella and funky straw decorations. So go crazy with the garnish, and fill up your Instagram feed with those #cocktail snaps.

Here’s how to make the perfect Piña Colada…

    What you’ll need

    Ice cubes
    50ml coconut milk
    50ml gold rum
    75ml fresh pineapple juice
Cocktail umbrella / pineapple wedge to garnish

    The step-by-step method

    Makes one cocktail

    Chill glasses with ice.

Put the coconut milk, rum and pineapple juice into a blender.

    Add ice.

    Blend for 15 seconds.

    Pour into glasses and garnish.

    Did you know?

The Piña Colada was created on August 16th, 1954 at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico. And, it’s been the country’s national drink since 1978.

Where to find the best Piña Coladas on holiday

Piña Coladas might have originated in Puerto Rico, but you can taste some of the best in Cuba and the Dominican Republic. There’s Wanda’s Café Bar in Havana, and the Grand Bahia Principe Cayacoa hotel bar in the Dominican Republic. If you’re heading to Crete this summer, check out the Caribbean-themed Club Tropicano where you can taste some of the best Pina Coladas in Greece.
