1. Go zip-lining through the rainforest
Costa Rica’s Monteverde Cloud Forest is your go-to for whizzing through monkey-teeming trees on a zip line. Wondering how it works with little ones? You can pick a lower-to-the-ground, kid-friendly zip line so that mini daredevils won’t miss out on all the action. Or, if zip-lining isn’t your thing, you can get a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest from an aerial tram – it’s a more chilled-out way to see Costa Rica’s wildlife. Look out for howler monkeys, brightly-coloured toucans and snoozing sloths.

2. Explore top sights on horseback
Sure, there’s horse riding back at home, but then there’s horse riding through rainforests, up mountains and along deserted sandy beaches – what better way to tick off Costa Rica’s natural sights? Join a horse riding tour outside La Fortuna town and clip-clop into the world-famous Arenal Volcano National Park. It boasts two active volcanos – Chato Volcano and Arenal Volcano – plus, natural hot springs and the cascading Fortuna Waterfall.
Fancy trotting along the beach? Do it in El Jobo
3. Kick back on the best beaches
Costa Rica’s not all jungles, though – it packs in plenty of powder-soft sands, too. Playa Matapalo and Coco Beach are the big hitters, while El Jobo’s on the sleepier side. For a great all-rounder, check out Playa Flamingo. This Blue Flag hotspot has calm waters – perfect for paddling – and honey-hued sands. There’s a yacht-filled bay here, too – and it’s all hemmed by tropical greenery. Howler monkeys, parrots and lizards will join you – it’s all part of the Costa Rican charm.
4. Watch turtles in the wild
For a pinch-yourself experience, turtle watching should be at the top of your list. Costa Rica’s home to dozens of nesting beaches for species like endangered leatherback and green turtles. But where’s the best place to see them? Tortuguero National Park – it’s a protected area on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. You can head down to beach with a guide at night. The hawksbill and green turtle nesting season is from July to October, while leatherback turtles nest from February to April.
