we had to move hotel on the second day as the hotel room was absolutely disgusting, it was mouldy smelly and everything was damp. The toilets had sick splashes all up the wall. They were not going to move us until we had proof of our horror at breakfast with a pile of mouldy bread from the toasties...with this in ur hands they had no choice but to move us to another hotel, which is fantastic. Don't waste your time here. P.S we were not the only ones to complain about the rooms. Pool area gorgeous but spoilt with noise from young americans, not the hotels fault but still worth a mention.More
Great, great resort!
Riu Cancun is just incredible. You can't go wrong booking here - the staff, the amenities, the beach and pools, the food...everything. Check in: Totally efficient and painless. They hand you a cold beverage while they explain all the details and what is offered. Room: Our room was on the 7th floor overlooking the quiet pool. The room was nice, clean and everything worked great. Fridge stocked with beers, sodas and water! The only negative thing I can say about the room is the running water smells...unpleasant. But that is how it is all over Cancun, so it's out of the resort's control. Pools/beach: There's a bunch of pools. The quiet one is certainly quiet and laid back, but the 3 pools near the pool bar are a lot more active and fun...especially the activity pool and pool with the swim up bar. Those got downright rowdy at times! But a lot of fun. Other reviewers complain of the smell at these pools, and I definitely smelled it as well at times. It seemed to come and go, but it wasn't a puke smell (as others have said), it was more of a sewage smell. You will notice that same smell if you walk around Cancun though, so it's not limited to the resort. We actually got a rain shower one day while we were off the resort and all the drainage on the streets backed up...that same smell was EVERYWHERE after that. So it's definitely something to do with the drainage. Regardless, not pleasant...if the resort can do anything about it, they definitely should. The beach and ocean are nice. It could be tough to find a good spot sometimes, but that's to be expected. Food The majority of the food was excellent with a TON of options at every meal. We didn't try the al la carte restaurants, but the buffet was great. The only disappointment was that the actual Mexican food at the buffet was inconsistent...some great stuff (any of the stewed meat dishes, salsas), some not so great (burritos, guacamole). Bars Great. Never had to wait long for a drink, and the drinks are made consistently across all bars. They offer a few types of each booze, so definitely check what they have if you have a preference. Night club OK. It fills up fast and is super loud (loud is good, but the concrete walls made for some ear-piercing frequencies). There's a DJ and he plays mostly hip hop and Mexican/salsa/etc. You won't hear any EDM here. Entertainment crew/nightly shows: Entertainment crew is amazing and full of positive upbeat energy. They spend the day around the pool keeping everything fun, and at night they help warm everyone up for the nightly shows. The nightly shows are good! One night there was a live rock band doing covers of things like Guns and Roses and Whitesnake, another night a Mexican show complete with traditional dancing and costumes. Next time we visit Cancun, we will CERTAINLY stay here again. Highly recommended.More
Breath Taken Views & Great Hospitality Ever
It's always so hard to know where to start! Arrival: We arrived and were greeted with Non Alcoholic Cocktails (Wabba - this is a must try with Bacardi - Yummmm) we were placed in room 0004 on the ground floor bad view as it was right behind reception. We went back to reception and asked to be changed and we were told the hotel was booked out (Certainly not the hotels fault but our travel agent). Really upset I went back to the room and slept. Next day I remember asking reception for help locating a peso bank machine and Jose asking how everything was and I explained about a small issue with aircon and he asked me to come back at 7pm, which I did and both myself and next door were moved to a Junior Suite with an amazing view, so happy we tipped Jose and he was overwhelmed and literally became our best friend thereafter. Rooms: Our room was amazing Jose at reception deserves a big compliment for this as he knew exactly what we needed - Irma our room cleaner was literally the best ever, towel art was unreal, I was very upset she was not cleaning on my departure as I wasn't able to look after her (in tips) as much as I would of liked but she is fantastic and deserves a lot of credit for her work. The room was very spacious equipped with draws, a wardrobe, an iron, a safe, chairs, table, sofa 2 lockers & TV would of been nice to have a cuppa tea from time to time but lots of water, beer, Pepsi & spirits of course. Food: This was decent chicken breast, chicken wings, chips, chilli con carne in the buffet was my favourite - the BBQ sauce, gravy & pepper sauce were the nicest I have probably ever tasted. There is honestly so much to chose from and if you do it right you will really enjoy the selection. First 2 nights I got a bit of everything and by the 4 nights I was really bored of the buffet but if you do not put everything on your plate and be reasonable you will be able to eat the food everyday. The Japanese was beautiful I recommend the udon noodles with chicken & the chicken teriyaki omg amazing along with the tempura ice cream (fried ice cream yummmm). Breakfast was very boring after 5 days of it but the pancakes and hash browns were delicious you should also try the bran with strawberry yogurt & grapes beautiful. Most mornings we got Gil as our server who was amazing and could never do enough he even remembered our drinks after 1 day which I was very impressed with as there was 4 of us. Drinks: Measures were good, some of the staff were okay however I always loved going to David in the sports bar as he was literally the life and sole of the place when it came to watching football, making drinks and looking after everyone. He made us a number of special requested cocktails and they were made to perfection. He even knew what we liked and start recommend new and different cocktails. Mango Tango, Bahama Mama, Wabba with Barcardi, Mudslides & many I cannot remember but he was class and a top man. When I showed him the ingredients of a specific cocktail called a Caribbean Mai Tai he was able to make it no problem and it was delicious. 1 member of staff I felt sorry for was J. Carlos we went into check what the night club was all about and this man wow he could make drinks it wouldn't surprise me if he made over 2000 drinks in 90 minutes, only then a member of staff joined him and all she done was slow him down and get in his way. He was a good character and had a great sense of humour and you could tell he loved his job. Entertainment Staff: The amount of time and effort these guys put into their job is mind blowing. Every member went out of their way to come and engage or speak to you to make sure you felt included in activities and part of the Riu family and entertainment. They even do shows for the guests and the rock night they done was my favourite show credit to them as they are not professional dancers but they gave it everything. Tips & Dos. Make sure and bring peso if your from Ireland or England most of the time you will save maybe €5/10 on transactions or purchases you make. Keep all your receipts and claim the tax back at the airport. When tipping on dollars $2 is okay and good for the buffet unless your very happy then $3/4 which is all between 40/80 peso. Some nights we tips 100/150 peso. Waiters at the pool/beach I recommend $2 dollars at the start and maybe a dollar or so before leaving if you like the pool and the sun and do not get your own drinks. If anyone goes above and beyond make sure you look after them and they will always go above and beyond. This place is truly one of the best places I have ever been in terms of hospitality. Overall: This place this hotel and the staff are next to none. We had one small issue with one of the waiters who had a small attitude issue but not everyone or everything is perfect but that person didn't damping our holiday vibes and it was honestly the best holiday I have been on 10 days is deffo not long enough. Where do I start! This Hotel is Amazing. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm smile and refreshing drink. (Much needed after a 10 hour flight.) Check in was really quick and straight forward. We were given a lovely room on the 6th floor with an amazing view. We were really impressed with the free wifi we had for the duration of our stay which worked perfectly everywhere in the hotel. We were also left a lovely note and bottle of sparkling wine to help us celebrate, which was a nice touch. This hotel is in a ideal location for the bars and clubs such as coco bongos etc. It is about a 5 minute walk. Outside the hotel is a bus stop which you can use if you want to explore further such as la Isla (shopping centre). You cannot fault the food and drink in this hotel. It has a large buffet restaurant for breakfast lunch and dinner, as well as 4 al a carte restaurant which we didn't even manage to eat at as we found the buffet had so much choice and different options every night. Great choice of cocktails too. However, the main thing which stood out for us were the lovely, friendly staff who genuinely could not do enough for you. These people made our holiday, not only in the hotel, but everywhere we visited in Mexico. They work so hard to ensure that you have a wonderful holiday and this did no go unnoticed. Thank you so much everyone at the Riu Cancun. This was our first trip to Mexico and we would love to come back one day! More
