Holidays to Nice dish out pretty pebble beaches, history and grandeur by the bucketload.
Nice pairs a historic old town with a balmy beach scene, and makes it look easy. The seafront prom’s well geared up for people-watching, and the pebbly shoreline’s up to its elbows in beach clubs. Throw a glitzy marina and a line-up of luxury shops into the mix, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a glamourous getaway on the French Riviera.
It’s not all about the beachfront around here – Nice has a corker of an arts scene up its sleeve, too. The likes of Picasso, Matisse and Chagall have all left their stamp on the place. The latter even designed his own museum – from the stained-glass windows in the concert hall right down to the Mediterranean gardens. And you can clap eyes on a massive collection of Matisse’s work in the aptly named Matisse Museum.
Nice’s old town’s had a pastel paint job. And the colours don’t stop at the buildings – just wait until you clap eyes on Cours Saleya’s rainbow-hued flower and fruit markets. This rest of the area’s jam-packed with historic sites, like the Sainte-Reparate Cathedral. Behind its bold, Baroque facade, this 17th-century gem squeezes in almost a dozen chapels – each one dedicated to a different saint.
Nice’s beaches steal a lot of the city’s limelight – the main pebble stretch comes with a stack of fashionable beach clubs, and it’s all backed by a palm-lined prom.
You won’t have to look far to find Nice’s main stretch of beach – the grey, pebbly shorefront stretches right the way across the city. It’s oozing with beach clubs and eateries, so you’ll be well looked after on your seafront stints.
If you’re hoping to dodge the crowds, check out Plage des Bains Militaires – or Beach of the Military Baths. It’s a teeny patch of pebble beach with loads of shade, and it’s usually pretty quiet.
This famously yummy stewed combo of herbs and veggies is stuffed with the likes of onion, tomatoes, carrots, basil, courgette and garlic. It’s usually served as a side dish.
Boiled eggs, green peas and sliced tomatoes on a bed of lettuce make up the base of this classic dish. Then, the whole thing’s topped with a dollop of tuna and anchovies.
Look to Nice’s street food stalls for a taste of this much-loved snack. It’s a crepe made with chickpea flour and olive oil, sprinkled with a hefty helping of pepper.
Slow-cooked beef, red wine, onions, carrots and herbs make up this hearty dish. It’s normally served with bread or pasta, so it’s a top choice if you’re hungry.
This pizza-like tart is made with a thick, bready dough and topped with caramelised onions, black olives and anchovies.
