From snow-dappled ski slopes to capital city sights, holidays to Austria offer a little bit of everything.

Surrounded by sights

Austria sits pretty in central Europe, with bundles of natural beauty and plenty of ways to see it. Ride the Zwolferhorn Cable Car for views of the Eastern Alps, look out at small-town streets from a rickshaw, or sail along the Danube River on a cruise to take in the capital, Vienna, at night. You can also take to the snow with one of the best ski-lift systems in the world.

Historic hits

Schoenbrunn Palace, on the outskirts of Vienna, is a jaw-dropper. Wander its well-kept gardens and you might feel like a royal yourself. Meanwhile, over in Salzburg, you'll find the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This mountainside town's the birthplace of Mozart – you can learn about this music legend's life during a visit to his former home, which is now set up as a museum.

Gourmet grub

Wiener schnitzel's a must at lunchtime – think breaded veal cutlets fried until crisp and served with creamy potato salad. Boiled beef in broth does nicely for dinner, too, known to the locals as tafelspitz. If you're out at a restaurant for dessert, strudel's the treat to go for.
