A scenic market village tucked in a valley, holidays to Wagrain are a mix of discovering local traditions and getting out in the fresh mountain air.

Folklore and festivals

Though a popular winter spot, Wagrain bursts back into life in the summer. This authentically Austrian village is steeped in tradition and history, with its charming chalet-style buildings and Gothic churches. There’s a real lively feel and the locals love to celebrate their vibrant culture – make sure you catch the weekly folklore evenings filled with dancing, music and colourful costumes, and there’s more live bands and performances at the marketplace every Friday. And if you’re around in September, you’ll be just in time for the highlight of the season, the Harvest festival.

Wagrain’s writers

Wagrain’s also got rich literary roots and was home to two of Austria’s famous writers, Joseph Mohr and Karl Heinrich Waggerl. To find out all about their lives, follow the culture trail that weaves through the village. Learn all about Mohr’s work in the Silent Night museum and how he wrote the well-known festive tune, then head next door to the Waggerl Haus museum. You’ll also pop by a small Baroque chapel and the parish church along the way, before rounding things off at the war memorial.

Walks and water parks

The area’s packed with activities in the great outdoors, from thrilling tree-top walks and adventure trails to Wagrain Water World, which is free with your Salzburger Sportwelt Guest Card. Dip in and out of the swimming pools and saunas, and kids will have a blast whizzing down the slides or in the play area. When you’re ready to dry off, stretch out on the grassy lawn with a good book. And if you’d prefer something a bit more scenic, jump on the bus to Lake Jägersee and follow the easy walking path around the shore. Although you can’t swim here, the emerald-green water, woodland and mountains are a real treat for the eyes.
