Saddle up for a solid dose of tranquillity – holidays to Niederau are straight-up peaceful, with dreamy mountain trails and oddles of snap-worthy moments.
An Austrian mountain village close to the border with Germany, Niederau dishes up serious serenity – think sweeping farmland and snow-capped mountains. Just a 20-minute walk away, the Bach Mountain Farming Museum provides a taste of local culture, while chair-lifts – or the free Markbachjoch gondola – can carry you comfortably to the top of ski trails.
On Markbachjoch Mountain, you'll find awe-inspiring artwork in the Sculpture Park surrounding a glistening lake. Have a look around, then sit by the waters or tuck in to a spot of strudel in a cute café.
It's a walker's paradise of nature-filled hiking trails here, but that's not all Niederau has to offer. The Bummelbahn train – pulled by a tractor – can carry you across the valleys. It'll get you great mountain views as you trundle past traditional farms and fields. This plucky little ride even runs in the snow – and the place is at its prettiest when it's coated in white.
Here are some ideas of things to do when staying in Niederau:

Niederau has a couple of shops where you can pick up a few souvenirs. But for serious bargain hunters, the nearby town of Wörgl has a big shopping centre to explore.
Niederau has very little in the way of shops to browse. There are a couple of sport shops stocking a small selection athletic apparel and products. For more variety, hop on a bus to Wörgl, which has a big shopping centre.
Niederau is nestled in the countryside, so there’s beautiful scenery to take in while wandering the scenic town during an after-dinner walk.
Niederau is quite a quiet town, but there are a few lovely places to enjoy a few drinks – the Witch Alm is particularly good for cocktails. Occasionally, there’s a festival on or some live music to enjoy, so keep an eye on what’s on that week.
In Niederau, local specialities are a must-have. This is because all of the recipes – passed down through generations – use fresh and exciting ingredients and are made with passion. Even the liqueurs and brandies are distilled with high-quality berries from the local farms. You’ll be able to try traditional dishes at the small family-run restaurants that dominate the town, and inside the hotel restaurants.
Located in the Hotel Austria is the Austria Stuberl. On certain days of the week the restaurant specialises in different variations of a dish – Sundays and Mondays are for schnitzel and Thursdays is for knödeltag, or dumplings.
At the bottom of the mountain is the simple and traditional Restaurant Tennladen. With outdoor seating, huge portions and reasonable prices, it’s a great place to pop into for a tasty and hearty lunch.
Just off the main road is the Witch Alm Bar & Grill, a modern bar and restaurant serving a combination of American and Austrian dishes. The service is prompt, the bill will be surprisingly small and on certain nights they hold live music events.
Niederau is a real walker’s haven. The typically Tyrolean village is ideal for exploring on foot, so you can take you time admiring the beautiful buildings. Further out, there are plenty of trails through meadows and up mountains.
The nearest station is in Wörgl (25 minutes away by bus), where you can catch a train to Innsbruck (30 minutes) or Auffach (15 minutes). A unique feature in Niederau is the Bummelbahn leisure train, which runs regularly through the valley and is perfect for admiring the local scenery.
The bus to Wörgl takes around 25 minutes and costs approx €5, while the buses to Oberau and Muhtal cost approx €4. The main bus stop is at the Berglift, next to the Hotel Austria. Both daily and weekly tickets are available, so you can get the best value.
Use of the summer lifts in the area is free with your Wildschönau Card – there’s the Markbachjoch cable car as well as the Wiederbergerhorn and Reitherkogel cable cars in Alpbach Valley.
Niederau and the Wildschönau Valley are home to over 300km of marked walking trails – ranging from a nice, flat stroll along the valley to Oberau, to energetic hikes to the top of the Grosser Beil, the valley’s highest peak at 2,309m. The mountain gondolas, which are all free to use with your Wildschönau Card, give easy access to the higher trails. And the tourist office organises a weekly guided walking programme too. Remember to bring your camera to snap photos of your gorgeous surroundings, from flower-filled meadows to cute mountain cows.
