Holidays to Germany pick and mix buzzy cities, quiet mountain trails and a bit of Black Forest folklore.

Heaps for the gram

Germany's a hot holiday destination in central Europe and it’s ready for its close-up. Pack your camera to capture the coastal vistas up north, the snow-capped Alps to the south, and vineyards and valleys in between. And don’t skip the Black Forest in Bavaria. Here, ancient woodlands disguise elegant chalets and castles.

Big on city breaks

Germany’s city breaks are a quick win, with the whole country no more than a couple of hours away by plane from the UK. The cities all rack up something different as well, from Cologne’s gargantuan cathedral to Frankfurt’s cloud-brushing skyscrapers and Stuttgart’s sprawling green spaces. And you can’t move for tales of history, too – the likes of Dresden, Dusseldorf and Nuremberg were practically rebuilt from scratch after World War II, and they still have plenty of nods to their chequered pasts.

Can’t beat a bit of Berlin

Berlin’s the most popular pick for a city break in Germany. It squeezes green spaces, a mega collection of museums and a load of world-famous landmarks into one neat trip, even worthy of just a weekend. Tick off the parliamentary Reichstag building, the grand Brandenburg Gate and the copper-topped Berlin Cathedral. Plus, Berlin claims the title of Europe’s clubbing capital, known for its techno scene and the notoriously exclusive nightclub, Berghain.

Beer halls, snacks and bevs

Wherever you go in Germany – especially in the country’s cities – you won't be far from a beer hall, where massive steins of local brew are on tap. These are best soaked up with doughy pretzels and mustard-topped currywurst sausages. Wine fans are not forgotten about either. Vineyards across the country are dedicated to crafting lip-smacking vino varieties, like Riesling.
