The Riu Yucatan has a lot going for it, from its beachside setting to its triple helping of pools.
It’s hard to tell where the pools end and the sea starts at the Yucatan – a powdery white beach runs right alongside the property. You’re only a 5-minute drive from Playa del Carmen’s bars and restaurants, too.
The rooms are really fresh and contemporary. Each one comes with a big flatscreen TV and a roomy balcony or patio.

Me and my partner have just returned from the Riu Yucatan Mexico for 2 weeks in September. A fantastic 2 weeks stay at the Yucatan the staff work extremely hard and will go out of there way they simply can't do enough for you. Check in went smoothly and your bags are taken to your room for you. The rooms where very modern and lived up to expectations. The rooms are cleaned everyday new towels, bedsheets etc. it is left spotless! the maids also leave little notes and towel animals which is a really nice touch. We had room 3217 which was a good location pretty much in the centre of everything in the hotel, overlooking the trees with all the monkeys it was amazing to watch them whilst sat on the balcony except not so great when they wake you up at 6am howling! Hence the name 'howler monkeys' if your an animal lover like me the wildlife here is brilliant from monkeys to iguanas, coatis and peacocks. There are three pools the Ibiza which is very quiet and peaceful and the main pool which is split into two one of which has the swim up bar, right on the beach and lots of entertainment. They have foam party's, beach party's and games going on to keep you entertained but they don't hassle you if you don't want to get involved. We had no problems at all getting sunbed there is plenty to go around. We are normally pool people but the beach was out of this world so we went there most days. We did jet skiing which was brilliant definately recommend it for $65. The food you can't really complain about as there is something for everybody. Our favourite restaurant was the steakhouse by far. We weren't keen on the Mexican but we don't like spicy food and it was very warm (no air conditioning in there) We went into playa del carmen a couple of times just for a change of scenery we just got a taxi only 90-120 pesos one way, be sure not to tip as this price is already inclusive of a tip. You do get hassled quite a lot wanting you to buy drugs but I didn't nesscarily feel unsafe. Plenty of police presence. We had drinks and food I would recommend Zenzi's beach bar for food and 'pez vela' it's a little cute bar with swings not too expensive either. Coco bongos is an absolute MUST! The best night we have ever had! We did Gold member VIP and was worth every penny, you had your own table with your own waiter. One tip tho don't book with thomson they rip you off as on average per excursion they are £40 more expensive. Also don't use the transport put on by thomson get a taxi about 9:30ish so you are there for the doors opening at 10 the bus doesn't pick you up till 9:50 and has multiple pick ups and you end up being late and getting rubbish seats. We also did the swimming with Dolphins excursion which was incredible to say the least, we upgraded when there for an additional 900 pesos in order to have just two of us in a group allowing more time to engage with 'devil' (the dolphin) although the experience with the dolphins was great, during the allocated 45mins, they are very much prioritising the photo's they take of you, this is great if your prepared to pay 175 dollars for 12 photo's, for the record this is more than you pay for the dolphin experience. We then asked for the price of 1 photo to be emailed, which again was 40 dollars, not bad if you did 10 rounds with Mayweather! We also did XPLOR which was a brilliant day all inclusive as well so don't have to worry about money for food or drinks. We booked it with the guys down at playacar shops a lot cheaper than thomson and reliable. If your unsure whether to take dollars or pesos we found tipping in dollars is better, and paying for excursions, meals and drinks is better to pay in pesos as generally speaking the change you are given is in pesos at a much worse exchange rate, just a heads up. Thomson overall were fantastic, the reps in the hotel (Craig in particular) was fab, brilliant at his job and sorted any problem you had straight away, he knows his stuff. We recommend going to the welcome meeting we normally don't but he had lots of hints and tips about the hotel, trips and the surrounding areas. A few niggles... We did book extra space seats which we paid extra for £60 each outbound and inbound and were in seats 30B and C we lost out on this leg room tho due to everybody queuing in front of us for the toilet. The cabin crew do there best to reduce the queue size and Angie who was in charge dealt with the problem straight away by putting a personal announcement out. So if you book extra space seats don't book the ones near the toilet. As stated above however due to the overwhelming heat and humidity we thought that more areas would of been air conditioned, however if you eat anywhere other than the main buffet or the Italian, be prepared to sweat as all the other areas have no air conditioning. Overall, The hotel and Mexico itself is amazing the best holiday we've ever had and we will definately be returning amazing experience from start to finish. More
Mother and daughter holiday
I cannot think of a single bad thing to say about this hotel. We had the most amazing stay at the Riu Yucatan! The rooms were immaculate and modern, cleaned everyday with fresh towels. Brilliant air con and comfy beds. Not noisy at all so brilliant nights sleep! The hotel itself and the swimming pools are modern and clean, 5 beautiful restaurants with PLENTY of choice for food, there is something for everyone! The staff were extremely attentive, always smiling and more than happy to help. That includes the bar staff! The entertainment team at the hotel were absolutely brilliant!!! Such hardworking, friendly people who are genuinely happy to be there and make your stay that bit more exciting! Felix was one of our entertainment staff who particularly brightened up the day, encouraging us to get involved in the activities and teaching us to Spanish dance! There's a daytime activity for everyone and the nighttime shows they put on are outstanding. A real credit to the hotel! So as if all of this isn't enough you have the beach ON YOUR DOORSTEP and the town just a short walk or drive away. Our Thomson Reps Craig and Cali were fantastic and so helpful during our stay, they were happy to go above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed! I can't recommend this hotel anymore!!! What an absolutely fantastic, beautiful place😀. More
Lovely family holiday
My wife and I went with our 12 year old daughter and 80 year old mother in law so a real broad spectrum! Can only describe the place as fantastic - all Hotel very clean, good choice of food in the main restaurant 'Hacienda' - rooms cleaned daily with clean towels - well stocked mini bar and pool / beach towels which you can change as often as you like. Rooms are a good size with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The hotel is steps from a fabulous beach with free loungers and parasols. We did find the water sports a bit pricey so didn't bother. Every single member of staf from cleaners up to management were all so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. To mention individual names would be unfair in case we forgot someone so a huge big thank you to each and every one of you for making our holiday so enjoyable. We fully intend returning to Mexico in the near future and at least we won't need to look at any other hotels!!More

We took our adult children here for a week last year and it was very nice. We loved the shopping in the city and always felt safe. The pool was big and great poolside service. We always loved how they grilled out daily beachside during lunch. I would recommend this resort. We visited in July of 2016.More

I really liked this hotel. The service standard was high and the rooms spacious and clean. It was my first time on an all inclusive vacation and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The beach was clean and the water wonderful. Obviously at Playa del Carmen you pay much more for any kind of service than you would in real life Mexico, but that's a given. Food was good and plentiful. I can recommend this hotel. Also for families with kids.More
