The Riu Yucatan has a lot going for it, from its beachside setting to its triple helping of pools.
It’s hard to tell where the pools end and the sea starts at the Yucatan – a powdery white beach runs right alongside the property. You’re only a 5-minute drive from Playa del Carmen’s bars and restaurants, too.
The rooms are really fresh and contemporary. Each one comes with a big flatscreen TV and a roomy balcony or patio.

An Okay Resort
Check In - a suggestion to hotel management. If you arrive at the hotel prior to the 3PM check in, please allow guests to check in. We arrived around 1PM; front desk stated room is not ready, come back at 3. Well, everyone was told the same thing. How can all the rooms become available ALL at the same time? Food - best restaurant for us was Asian. All the others were OK; food is like cruise ship food. Nothing spectacular. Beach is one of the best. Alcohol - please consider offering at least mid-grade. Nothing top of the line. Orange juice is not good. Consider upgrading the orange juice. If you're looking for a family resort, this is the one. There were lots of kids running all over the place. Rooms were clean and cleaning staff showed up everyday. Thanks. Hotel management - please consider offering a better selection of After Hours food. You should open one of the food areas and offer fries, burgers, pizze and hotdogs.More
We were at Riu Yucatan June 26- July 10. The hotel is perfect for all ages. The hotel grounds, rooms, restaurants, pools, beach are perfect. The staff at the front desk, waiters at the restaurants, the bartenders, the entertainment team (Kim, Susana, Felix, Hose, Anthony, Sergio, Juliassa and others), the cleaners are excellent. The beach is amazing white powdery sand with a lot of palm trees. The sea crystal blue and warm with a fish swimming around you.The hotel is a short cab ride to the 5th avenue (90 pesos) or 30 minute walk. The front desk money exchange for CAD is very low. Instead go to Playacar Shopping Mall ( 5 minute walk) and the exchange rate is much better. Also at the Playacar Shopping Mall you can buy cheaper tours than in the hotel. The hotel has a doctor. My daughter got sick, an ear infection. The fee for the doctor consultation is 2400 pesos. We didn`t want to pay that much. Instead we went in Playa Del Carmen Farmacias Del Ahorro. The doctor consultation is free. We only paid for antibiotics. Use hotel doctor only if it is an emergency. As a Riu Yucatan guest you can use Riu Tequila and Riu Playacar. You have to eat breakfast and dinner at Riu Yucatan.Otherwise you can visit them anytime and eat lunch there.Do not listen to bad reviews.Go with open mind and you will enjoy it.More
We recently book a trip to Playa Del Carmen. We were supposed to stay at the Riu Tequila. Upon check-in we were upgraded to the Riu Yucatán. The Riu Yucatán has nice rooms and it is a beach front hotel. One night water was leaking from the ceiling. We called to report the issue and the maintenance staff showed up within minutes to fix the problem. Food is good. No reservations are needed for the speciality restaurants, which was a nice touch. Drinks were good. Would definitely stay again. More
Birthday Trip Mexico Hotel Riu Yucatan
We visited Mexico from the 4th July to the 11th for my husbands birthday . Like many people we looked at recent reviews which were mostly good . We had a wonderful week . There is something for everyone at this hotel . Quiet areas and pools to relax .and a pool near the beach where the animation team work hard to keep you entertained . For beach lovers , this beach is perfect with soft white sand beautiful clear blue sea offering various water sports . The hotel has a modern theme and our room which was 5316was well located for both the beach the reception area and restaurants . (Up two short) fights of stairs ) Our room was very clean and comfortable . and the maid visited every day On the day of my husbands birthday the maid decorated our room beautifully. There are a number of restaurants , our favourite was the Italian and the Asian .We were greeted with a cold drink on arrival which was more than welcome . The staff were pleasant and helpful and always greeted with an Hola .There are two more Rio hotels within easy walking distance where you can visit for lunch and use their facilities . This is in our opinion a good value for money hotel .If there was any criticism I think if you were staying for two weeks the menu may become a bit repetitive .Also this may be nitpicking but I love fresh orange juice with my breakfast and could get only that diluted stuff .? This hotel was lovely but in honesty would say its a 4 , however , we had a great time and would definitely recommend. We traveled with Thompson Dreamliner in premier which was very comfortable with attentive staff . Jeaniebee More
WOW just WOW
Sorry this might be long.... Sadly we have just returned from our 2 week holiday at the Riu Yucatan. I say sadly because we were just not ready to come home. Where do I start ?? Firstly the check in process was very speedy and initial 'need to know info' was quickly and easily explained. The welcome drink was a nice touch. We were given our room keys and within 5 mins our cases were brought to our room. Our room (1602) was in the single block right next to the main reception / restaurant/ main bar area overlooking the palm trees and quiet pool - for us we determined throughout our stay that when we return to this hotel next year we'll request the same block, it's location was perfect. The room was spacious, clean and had the biggest comfiest bed. The room was kept spotless by the maids and the previously mentioned towel art was a delight each day. Air con was fantastic, mini bar and optics were extensive. The hotels multiple restaurants meant you had a wide choice of food, it's impossible for anyone to go hungry. A credit to the hotel. The staff, where to begin.... we have travelled extensively but have never come across such attentive, polite, courteous and genuinely nice people as we encountered in this hotel, they truly made us feel so welcome and every single one of them would make sure they greeted you even if only in passing in the extensive hotel grounds. A big shout out to TORO our regular waiter when we used the buffet restaurant, a credit to the hotel. The beach is out of this world and the staff work tirelessly all day making sure it is clean and clear of any rubbish or discarded cups. The waters are the warmest I've swam in. Stunning. If you can't find a lounger where you want one, staff are quick to run and bring loungers to you. The main pool was very busy and where all the activities took place, this was not our scene so we avoided it, however the quiet pool was heavenly and loungers were never a problem. The only thing you'll find by the quiet pool is the intense heat as it has no breeze ( trust me you'll want a breeze because it's hot hot hot), we spent most of our lazy days on the beach, a lovely breeze under the palm trees. TIPS: We were advised NOT to book our day trips with our thomson reps as they're way more expensive BUT we still booked our first 2 trips with them as we were nervous about booking our trips outside of the hotel. This is my only regret. We booked XEL HA and CHICHEN ITZA (both fantastic days out) with thomson but realised during our holiday we could have got the same trips almost half the price had we have booked with the tourist trip guides in the row of shops just outside of the hotel. We booked a trip (swimming with sea turtles, Tulum & cenote) with the tour guide down the road - the best trip we did, but paid half the price. The staff work tirelessly throughout the day & night, drop them a tip. We tipped our maid, our waiters and the guy on the beach that always made sure we had loungers where we wanted them. They don't expect tips but we found they were very grateful. CONGRATULATIONS if you've booked the Riu Yucatan, you won't be disappointed. THANK YOU to all at the hotel for making our holiday so special and memorable. We never book the same place twice, this will be the exception because we can't wait to return. See you next year :)More
