Visit a hilltop fortress in Herceg Novi

A 20-minute drive is all it takes to get from Bijela to another of the Bay of Kotor’s big-name towns – Herceg Novi. The old quarter and marina draw big crowds, but you’ll find one of the most underrated outlooks on the hillside behind the centre. The Spanish Fortress – or Spanjola – was built in the 16th century to watch over the bay, and the battlements are in great condition today. That’s not the main reason for visiting – the views from the turret tops show off mountains, inlets and the Adriatic Sea.
