Carnival of Santa Cruz
This colourful parade, which takes over the entire city in February each year, is often compared to the famous fanfare of Rio di Janeiro’s legendary festival. Flamboyant illuminated floats, dancing troupes and folks in fancy dress are just the tip of the iceberg. Each year’s got a theme, with things like fantasy, Caribbean and pirate takeovers in the past. The party continues through the night, with a carnival queen elected and splinter celebrations breaking out on every street.
