Naples has one of those warm, subtropical climates that makes us Brits green with envy. Even in winter, it’s one of the warmest places in the States – think around the 20°C-mark. Plus, there’s barely any rain at this time of year. In fact, the most falls in summer, but the afternoon downpours are usually over in a flash. May to September sees the mercury creep into the 30s. If you fancy it a little cooler, swing by in spring, when it’s warm, but less humid.
The USA has a visa waiver programme, which lets British tourists visit for up to 90 days without a visa. You must get an authorisation from ESTA – the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation - before you travel, otherwise you’ll be refused entry. You can register through the ESTA website – applications currently cost $14. The US also has specific passport requirements, so it’s a good idea to check that your passport will be accepted. Just so you know, if you buy any toys that resemble weapons – such as toy swords or lightsabers – you’ll need to pack them in your hold luggage, rather than your hand luggage. Under UK law, anything that has the appearance of an offensive weapon isn’t allowed in the cabin of the plane.
