Lefkas is a beautiful Ionian island in Greece, mixing traditional tavernas with top bars and nightclubs. This hotel is just metres away from the lively but small town of Nidri and its beach. It’s got a real Greek villa feel, with tall white walls and rooms with balconies overlooking the pool. There’s a bar to treat yourself to a drink on your lounger – you are on holiday after all – and there’s even a separate pool for the kids, so you can sip it in peace. They do barbecue nights here and your continental breakfast is included. Plus, temps average 24°C in May, so Greece really is the place to be.

This hotel is a great shout for young families. If your kids aren’t in school yet, you can beat the May half-term rush and holiday in the Canaries for less here. The place is made up of a collection of apartments with a few restaurants, pools and a splashpark – you could just hang here if you wanted to. There’s even a Swim School and free Parent & Toddler Swim sessions, which run for 30 minutes for parents and little ones aged four and above. On land, you’ve got sports and activities on offer, including family football, tennis and a couple of dance-inspired sessions. This spot’s even by the marina for daytrips over to the other islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, too.

You’ve got an infinity pool up there, loads of loungers and sweeping views over Faro and Ria Formosa Natural Park – imagine it at sunset! There’s a bar too for that golden hour drink, as well as a spa with an indoor pool and fitness centre downstairs. There are two restaurants to pick from or you can eat your way through Portugal’s yummy cuisine in cafés and hotspots in town. If you want to lay out on some sand, the beaches are about a 20-minute bus away.

Travel to Spain by train via the south of France from London St Pancras International station. Starting your summer couldn’t be easier – you just hop on a train to Paris and then take a direct train to Nîmes, rolling through the French countryside. Nîmes is known for having some of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world and is even dubbed ‘the most Roman city outside of Italy’. Then, head to Tarragona and settle in for three nights. Here, bask on the beach and explore Bosque de la Marquesa National Park.
