Kontokali holidays aren't just great for tasting Greek island life – they plonk you within easy reach of a dynamic daytripping duo, too.
Things mosey along at a saunter in Kontokali. It’s tacked onto Corfu’s eastern shoreline, about 10 minutes’ drive from the capital, Corfu Town. Although it shares a similar setting to its city pal, things are a little more low key here. The highlights are a stylish marina, filled with wallet-busting yachts, a hamper of Greek eateries, and a couple of dainty beaches.
This place rubs shoulders with the town of Gouvia – it’s so close that the two are practically joined at the hip. A 10-minute walk gets you into its town centre, which is pepped up by a bigger bundle of bars and restaurants. In the other direction, you’ve got a gentle giant ready and waiting. Corfu Town’s the island’s biggest hub, but the atmosphere’s more about culture than carnage. You’ve got a historic fortress, ornate churches and a slick shopping prom.
A pair of sand-and-shingle strips make up the beach offering in this neck of the woods. One of them’s buddied up with the stone archways of an old Venetian boatyard – it’s in Gouvia, so you can reach it in 10 minutes on foot. Closer to home, a couple of minutes’ stroll gets you to Kontokali’s skinny peninsula, which is ruffled with a swoop of lounger-dotted sand.
Kontokali boasts an incredibly clean sand and shingle beach which is cleared of weed and rubbish every morning. The water is shallow and has been given the EU Blue Flag status which indicates that it is suitable for swimmers of all standards. Sunloungers and parasols can be hired on the beach.
