Holidays to Prina offer the peace and quiet of a traditional Cretan village, high up on a hilltop.
Pocket-sized peace
It won't take you long to feel at home in tiny Prina, nestled in a cosy little spot down in southern Crete. The nightlife here's pretty low-key – think traditional tavernas against a backdrop of pine hills and olive groves – but livelier Agios Nikolaos is just a 20-minute drive away. That's if you can tear yourself away from Prina's delightfully winding streets, with whitewashed houses topped by terracotta tiles.
Local produce
Prina's famous for its honey, so be sure to pick up a few jars at the local mini-market. In the village's family-run tavernas, try traditional rice-stuffed vine leaves, chicken on skewers and hearty lamb moussaka. Or, go for the freshest coastal catch of the day – it usually takes pride of place on the menu.
Blue Flag beauty
Drive just 10 minutes from Prina and you'll find the Blue Flag award-winning beaches that make up the necklace of bays around Istron. Voulisma Beach is a sandy stretch, while shady Panteleimonas is pebbly underfoot – so bring sturdy shoes. Best of all, neither's likely to be overcrowded.Best time to go to Prina
