There's a lot to see in nearby Albufeira itself, but you can also take a boat tour from the marina to explore the Algarve coast at large – and keep your eyes peeled for dolphins. A little farther at a 30-minute drive away, historic Silves – with its Moorish castle and stately cathedral – is a culture-lover's dream.

The cliffs here aren't just pretty to look at – they also make a handy walkway. Hit the dusty trails at sunrise to avoid the midday heat, and reward yourself with a dip at one of the many secluded beaches you'll find along the way.
