Umag holidays take you skipping through the centuries. The Medieval start line's in the old town, and time fast-forwards when you reach the modern marina.

Slowed-down setting

Umag’s one of the most northern towns in Croatia, with neighbouring Slovenia just a short flit away. Things chug along at a gentle pace, with days spent sauntering through the old town and café-hopping along the waterfront. It’s got a luxury edge, too, courtesy of the six-figure yachts that nudge against the harbourside.

Stunning shoreline

The magnifying glass is trained firmly on the marina here. It’s shaped like a big wine glass, with sleek boats bobbing on one side and a museum-dotted peninsula on the other. The neighbouring cove’s picture book stuff, with a stone-sided bell tower peeking above the terracotta-topped roofs, and sea-view restaurants tucked up against a stone promenade.

Beach days

While Umag might not have its own beach, there are plenty of places nearby where you can get your sunbathing fix. There’s a pebbly, pine-backed stretch five minutes’ drive away in Katoro, and another even closer in neighbouring Monterol.
