Shop for traditional souvenirs in Ouranoupolis

If holiday snaps aren’t enough to remember your trip by, the town’s got a decent selection of souvenir shops for you to peruse. But instead of your standard fridge magnets and pencil sharpeners, these keepsakes are inspired by the monasteries around Mount Athos. Prayer ropes, known as komboskini, crop up at most stores, and you can also buy wine from Athos’ vineyards, hand-painted religious icons, and flags bearing the state’s emblem – a double-headed eagle.
