Best time to go to Basel

When you visit Basel really depends on your plans and preferences. But the most popular time to visit Basel is the period between May and September. This is when the weather is at its best, peaking in the height of summer, where the temperature averages in the late-twenties, but can reach mid-thirties. This is the busiest time of year, so to avoid the crowds you can plan your trip in the Spring or Autumn when temperatures are still comfortable for exploring. The winter season here, is December through to March and experiences milder weather than other areas of Switzerland. This time of year is popular for the Christmas markets in December and the Carnival of Basel which is normally around the end of February.

Passports and Visas

British citizens don’t need a visa to enter Switzerland but must have a valid passport. For the most up-to-date passport and visa info, visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/switzerland/entry-requirements.

Don't forget to arrange your travel money and insurance before you go.

Health and safety

You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you while you’re away. Also, if you’re travelling to Switzerland and you apply for a card now, you'll get a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) instead of an EHIC. This entitles you to emergency medical treatment on the same terms as Swiss nationals. It won’t, however, cover you for medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment or non-urgent treatment. Visit www.nhs.uk/ehic for full details on what it covers. You do not need to apply for a GHIC if you already have an EHIC. Your EHIC remains valid in the EU and Switzerland until it expires. An EHIC or GHIC is free of charge. For the latest health and safety information, visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/switzerland/health
