Just come back after Christmas break never going to this hotel again. We were in room 509 full of ants in living room and bathroom. Reported to reception even took the bag of sweets to them that was awash with ants. No apology just said they would get it deep cleaned never happened. Never even come to inspect the room. Got fed up went out and bought a ant spray ourselves. All inclusive holiday proved to be expensive because we ate out most of the time because food was cold not much variety. Desserts still frozen. No English tea to drink so made do with peppermint tea which was drinkable. Never ever going here again.

Good location and friendly staff. Good breakfast. Room cleaned daily. Requested for an upper level room and got room 906. Beautiful view of Funchal and sea from balcony. Had good time and no complaints. Had a small kitchen that was very useful prepare food and coffee. Good fridge. GOOD public bus services. Bus 24 follows the road above, bus 4 road below, buses 1& 2 along the main road about 100m and also bus 48 to Monte there. Plenty of supermarkets nearby. Hilly location that is not suitable for people with walking difficulties. Will be going there in 2018.
dated, clean, ok price

it's all true. hotel has 3* and it's quite dated. but the price is fair. breakfast is ok, quality of food is 3/5. room size was ok and the view over the pool and sea was superb. inside pool was warm and we enjoyed it. location is ok, I didn't mind the hill everyone keeps talking about. the weather was nice and temps were around 25, water in outdoor pool was around 22 (great for end of october).
Be realistic and enjoy your stay.

Having stayed previously at the sister hotel at the bottom of the steep slope, the Bougainvillea, I had the advantage of appreciating exactly where the Mimosa is. The road up to the hotel is steep but manageable unless you have mobility issues and has benches at intervals along it. (You can also wind your way up through the other 2 hotels which breaks up the walk) We are in our 60s and managed with no problem even though I’d fallen the night before we left and cracked my ribs! Just take your time. Going down the road wasn’t a problem but getting an inexpensive taxi back after a trip out was a good idea. Our room was very comfortable with plenty of wardrobe space for 2 ladies, a great bathroom, a micro kitchen which was handy for a cuppa in the room ( take your own tea/coffee - there’s a little supermarket 5 minutes down the road ) , a fridge is provided as is a hairdryer. The tv had lots of channels and was handy to keep up with the news etc. We had a stunning view of Funchal town and harbour as we were on the top floor. There was a small balcony. We had free WiFi throughout our stay. There is a safe in the room. We booked the all inclusive option which was handy as we knew we needn’t have to think about paying for each item. We had an a la carte, waiter served , meal on one day at the hotel chain’s restaurant as part of the deal. Breakfast (and lunch) was served at the pool bar, buffet style, and there was the usual breads, cereals and hot items. Dinner, another buffet, was in the dining room in the Estrelicia (it all feels like one hotel except you turn left at reception instead of right). Although at each meal there was always something for everyone and what’s served is ‘ok’, this is the only area that lets the hotel down and could do with some inspiration/ imagination. It wasn’t a problem to us as we weren’t paying 5 star prices so didn’t expect 5 star quality and knew we would be treating ourselves to a couple of nights out at Cris’s and Cris’s Place. The pool area always had plenty of sun beds available and towels can be provided at reception just by signing for them. The evening entertainment is a nice little diversion and the folklore show is lovely. We used the yellow bus tours which we booked at the travel agents just to the right on the main road. These are good value to get around the area. This was my third visit to Madeira and 2nd in a Dorisol hotel. If you are on a budget this hotel is fine. It’s clean and comfortable and the staff are pleasant. I would stay definitely here again.
Shabby but not chic

We booked our holiday early in the year, we booked two studio rooms. My friend is coeliac and lactose intolerant so required a kitchen in order to prepare her food. We got to the hotel to be told that the rooms we had booked were not available due to the fact that the hotel was full. We argued the fact we had booked many months ago. We were asked to leave our luggage and go and get ourselves a drink and a snack in the restaurant, ( take care when accepting this offer as when we came to book out, they had added 13 Euros each, to our bill, we only had a plate of salad and a roll plus a cup of tea, another 2 Euros = 15, you can get a three course meal and a glass of wine in a restaurant for less than that in the town). The receptionist gave us a card with our names, hotel, room number etc. Whilst having lunch I noticed he had ticked a box with a different hotel within the complex and not the Mimosa. So we went back and questioned him. He told us to go and look at the rooms, which we did. Basic rooms, not studios. We told him we were not accepting them. One hour later they managed to allocate us two studio rooms in the Mimosa. The rooms were clean, sea view, kitchenette, no kettle in mine. Towels small and thin, cracked tiles, paint coming off the door, mound and yukky stuff in the corner of the bath. Room was cleaned every day. Better quality towels put in later in the week. The hotel is very noisy at night. It was a plus having the indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi, as did not get too busy. However, the area also need a clean. The window frames were green and slimy and the wooden flooring around the jacuzzi was mouldy and lifting up. The wall inside of the pool felt very slimy. We had an issue with an item which went missing from one of our rooms (it got replaced as if by magic later that day). The couple on reception were very confrontational towards us, they made us feel as if we were liars. Very aggressive attitude. Breakfast was okay, plenty of food, although staff were not very friendly and items such as cutlery, tea bags and juices were not topped up and checked. My friend contacted the hotel way in advance about her diet (coeliac) however, she was not catered for and had to buy her own bread and cereal. (we had paid for B & B). On the plus side the hotel is in a good location ideal for local amenities, bars, restaurants etc. However, my friend and I are very fit and healthy so not a problem, if you struggle with walking, breathing problems etc it is a very steep climb to the Mimosa. The hotel needs some maintenance and refurbishment. Yes I know 3 star abroad is different to 3 star in England, however, this doesn't mean we have to put up with lack of care and attention to cleanliness and care. Madeira is beautiful, if a little overcrowded with high rise hotels, book the Lavada walks and get out into the countryside it is stunning.
