Wouldn't budge on a refund due to medical issues

My husband is in the hospital and I had to cancel our entire trip from Spain to NY. They wouldn't budge on considering a refund. I am fully aware that I booked a non-refundable rate, but an unexpected emergency is just that: unexpected.
They couldn't have cared less and didn't want to hear about it, despite me asking them to reconsider, and offering to provide documentation, and reaching out to their parent company.
