Marcan Resort

This was our sixth stay at Marcan Resort Hotel. We have visited in all seasons, low, mid and high and found it to be pretty much the same each time with a few exceptions. We stayed for two weeks beginning 08/10/19. The hotel is situated to the rear of the resort on a slight incline making it a little difficult to reach for the less mobile. It is adjacent to the mosque where Adhan (the call to prayer) is heard five times a day, the first being at sunrise so depending on where your room is it can be quite a loud awakening but it is all part of the Turkey experience. There are quite a few steps to negotiate in the grounds, again not very suitable for the less mobile and definitely a no go if you're wheelchair dependable. There is a slope that can help you to the restaurant but still a few steps too and the slope from the pool to ground level is very badly designed and quite dangerous even on foot with just a baby buggy, let alone pushing or manoeuvring a wheelchair. A big negative was when I hired a mobility scooter and was promptly told that they aren't allowed in the reception area nor would they allow me to charge it there. The alternative they gave was for me to keep and charge it in my room, which is totally and completely impossible. Phil, the guy I hired from gave them a good ticking off and rightly so. He said that every other hotel he delivers to is very helpful and accepting and that their attitude and discrimination is totally unacceptable. Moving on…. The food is quite samey but tasty and certainly edible. Chicken is definitely the main staple here for obvious reasons, it's cheap, versatile and favoured by many. Please don't expect a vast and varied menu, this is a budget all inclusive hotel and what you get for around £25 per day (low season) is more than acceptable, in fact it's quite miraculous. Similarly don't expect the catering to be solely for the British, this hotel, as with many places in Turkey offers international cuisine because yes, believe it or not other nationalities take holidays too! So if you want a full English every day there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, we've always found Joseph's to be the best and for a Sunday roast go to The Rose Garden. Do try the food here! I find those that complain the most and the loudest are those who lift the lid, look and then close it again because it's unfamiliar to them or there's no bangers and mash or pie and chips. If you don't try it you have no basis for complaint and you'll never know just how delicious it really is. The staff work like Trojans and are friendly, pleasant, helpful and always smiling. They work tirelessly to ensure your stay is a pleasant one and ask for little in return, maybe a small tip but definitely to be treated with respect. Those complaining that staff are unfriendly or rude are usually the ones treating them disrespectfully from the get go, something we've witnessed many times and will never understand. Treat them as you wish to be treated, always remember to smile and you'll enjoy your holiday much more. The entertainment or rather lack of it is definitely an issue; whilst we understand and accept that financially it's nonviable to bring in outside entertainment during low season, we do however expect to be entertained in some form by the resident entertainment manager, especially in the evening. During our two week stay there was bingo on three nights, a music quiz on three nights, disco music on three nights and that was it. Each time for just an hour from 10-11pm. Also trying to.play bingo or a quiz in little or no light is frankly ridiculous and virtually impossible, besides which bingo, for many is not a form of entertainment. The music quiz was not only the same one each time but the same one as seven years ago from a different entertainment guy. Quite laughable really. Music is played most days and nights from the pool bar. Abdullah (bar and restaurant manager) and Ali are the main bar staff and are really lovely, they will play any requests you have too on their laptop if they can. Anyone can press a few buttons and play music, I even plugged my Alexa in up there and played my downloaded music when the internet was down, which does happen quite often here. The general consensus was that the entertainment manager is on a cushy little number…. Free room and board, free meals and drinks AND on the payrill, nice job if you can get it!! The owner has revamped and replaced a few things. The tired old plastic sunbeds have been replaced by new wooden, very sturdy comfortable ones. Some new chairs and umbrellas, plus all new seat and sunbed cushions too, there are still some very old tattered and torn umbrellas but I'm sure that will soon be rectified. The snack bar has moved upstairs on the now extended restaurant veranda, which means the old brick pizza oven has gone. Pizza's at the snack bar used to be the best in town but sadly no more. The overall look and feel of the hotel is very pleasant. Unfortunately and most extraordinarily the same cannot be said for the owner himself. It seems many things are made purposely awkward i.e. tables and chairs situated far from the pool bar. Restaurant bar only open at meal times so if you wish to remain on the veranda in the evenings where there is actually some light you then have an even longer walk to the bar, up and down steps too. There is absolutely no shelter anywhere in the hotel grounds, so in the case of inclement weather your only refuge is your room. Our conclusion is the owner would prefer you go elsewhere and not remain on the hotel grounds too much during your stay presumably to save money. This being the case I would suggest to him that he doesn't run a "budget" hotel and charges a little more. Maybe then he'd be less paranoid and more friendly towards his guests. You'll see him around, usually at meal times but you'll be very privileged if he speaks to you or asks if you're enjoying your stay. As many have said, this hotel is more suited to couples. There is next to nothing here for youngsters; a small water slide pool and play area is all there is. There is a pool table which is fit only for the skip and a ping pong table that is not only impossible to reach but spent our entire stay with a pile of cat poo on it. This place clearly lacks identity and could certainly benefit from aiming for a particular clientele rather than throwing in thoughtless and somewhat pointless tokens for all. This hotel is a nice hotel ideally located at the end of the strip so is easy access for the shops and resturants, however the food leaves a lot to be desired and unless you want chips with everything there is not a lot of choice so it is handy the resturants are only minutes away, the entertainment is virtually non existant and the drinks choice very poor, the staff are all hard working and friendly but the waiting staff are all dressed in grubby T-shirts which is a bit off putting as if the front of house staff look grubby it makes you wonder what the kitchen and kitchen staff look like.The rooms and pool area are clean and tidy and well maintained, however there are no drink facilities in the room. No review would be complete without mentioning the mosque which is directly behind the hotel which calls worshipers to prayer early morning and during the day up to the evening which at first can be a pain but you grow to zone it out after a day or so and even miss it when it doesn't happen on time.If you decide to do an excursion Animal tours are a must, we did the tour up to the moutain to see the paragliders taking off, the ghost town and the boat trip in one and it was fantastic and Animal and his team are a riot, also the on site spa is also a must and very good value for money. Would we return probably not !
