Splendid isolation

Enclosed by lush tropical jungle, south-west Thailand's Cape Panwa is a hidden gem. The cape's peaceful sandy beaches are fringed with coconut palms – you won't believe that you're just a 20-minute drive from bustling Phuket Town. Bop around for a spot of shopping, or put on your explorer hat to visit jungle waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries.

Town delights

Phuket Town's brimming with enough restaurants, bars and sights to fill a day – plus the chance to glimpse some local wildlife at the aptly named Monkey Hill. Lively weekend markets serve scrummy delicacies and street-food favourites, from peanut-topped pad thai to sticky-sweet roti crepes.

Waterworld

The Ao Yon waterfalls are around a half hour's hike from Cape Panwa – their refreshing plunge pools are a reward for the walk. There's a beach nearby, too, but for that dreamy white-sand-and-blue-waves scene, take a water taxi to Koh Lon. Pack your snorkel, as these waters have loads of intriguing marine residents to spy on.
