Kremasti holidays have an unspoken keep-it-calm code, with sea views and big-hitting sights stealing the spotlight, while nearby Faliraki will have you reaching for your dancing shoes.
Kremasti’s scored a front-row seat on Rhodes’ northern coastline and comes with a whopper of a beach. It’s a pebbly number that slinks down the coastline for an impressive 10 kilometres, so there’s plenty of elbow room. The wind is the real talking point here, though. The near-constant breeze makes the waves prime territory for kitesurfing, windsurfing and water-skiing.
For a pocket-sized town, Kremasti packs in a surprisingly healthy dose of sights. Kick off your day by scouting out the ruins of the castle, which is perched on a hilltop and offers up a bird’s eye view of the area. It’s been knocking around since the 15th century and was once a summer home for the Knights of Rhodes Town. Elsewhere, you’ll find Kremasti Library, a six-columned building that could be mistaken for Rome’s Pantheon in miniature.
…beyond Kremasti and take a half-an-hour drive to the Valley of the Butterflies, in Petaloudes. Its winged residents, the Jersey Tiger moths, flutter in to feed on the sap from the sweet gum trees that grow in the woods here. Look out for their black and yellow striped wings pressed against the tree trunks alongside the valley’s trickling streams. As the butterflies soar through the sky, you’ll catch a flash of their cherry red overwings. The best time to visit is between June and September.
