Right on a scenic hillside, holidays to Scala are packed with Neapolitan charm and mouthwatering Italian eats.

Top of the rock

With cosy restaurants, Baroque churches and grade-A views, Scala delivers everything you'd expect from an Amalfi Coast hilltop setting – and then some. Tuck in to local favourites, or try to make them yourself – there's no truer hands-on Italian experience than a pasta-making class.

Amalfi and more

If you're after that Middle Age history fix, visit next-door neighbour Ravello for a glimpse of the towering Italian cathedral. Picture-perfect Amalfi isn't much further – after just 15 minutes by car, you can hire a boat or sea kayak to cruise the UNESCO-listed shoreline.

Bella beaches

Pop over to Minori's dreamy, quiet bay – it's only 10 minutes away by car. For a livelier afternoon, drive 30 minutes to Maiori town, where you'll find a roomy beach, a bustling promenade and a choice of al fresco eateries.

Historical marvels

Scala's crumbling Basilica of St Eustachio – with its sparkling sea view – is not to be missed. San Lorenzo Cathedral pulls in its own crowd with its ornate stucco walls and painted ceilings. Hop in the car for half an hour to see Maiori's Palazzo Mezzacapo – a rustic town hall converted into an exhibition and events space.
