Buzzing with Blue Flag award-winning beaches and a lively scene after sunset, holidays to Sliema are sophisticated seaside breaks.
Trendy but chilled-out, Sliema's one of the most sought-after neighbourhoods in Malta. This peaceful base is packed with elegant townhouses, historic cathedrals and forts, plus cool collections of modern art. You’ll also find designer boutiques along the two coastal roads of Tower Road and Trix ix-xatt.
Sliema's much more than its silver-screen-worthy setting. Get up close to native plants at the Independence Gardens, or settle down for a picnic at the family-friendly Qui Si-Sana playground. If you're looking for sandy stretches, make a beeline for St George's Bay, where the promenade's chock-full of restaurants and bars.
The sea itself takes centre stage in Sliema. For daytime views of Valletta's grand harbour from the water, catch a low-key cruise by ferry. Or, sailing trips can bring you to famous sights like the glistening Blue Lagoon. The stones of Sliema Beach host jet-skis and watersports, not to mention explorer-worthy scuba diving tours.
Fifteen minutes on a bus can take you to spirited Paceville Piazza's cluster of nightclubs. Closer to home, a mix of wine bars and posh pubs along the harbour make for quieter nights in, while adventurous types can check out the party boats that tour the water by night.
Sliema has some flat, rocky beaches with watersports, while the Marsa Sports Club, about 12 kilometres, offers golf, tennis and squash. There is a small strip of golden sand where Sliema meets St Julian's. Sun-worshippers either flock to the hotel pool, or the golden flat rocks where there is access to the sea.
