August might be the peak of summer in the UK. But, let’s be honest, if you want some real heat, you’ve got to head abroad. Here’s our pick of the top places to visit in August to get your sunshine fix, from culture-packed Croatia to under-the-radar Balkan gem, Bulgaria…
Croatia hits regular highs of 28C in August, so it’s the ideal time for a sun-soaked holiday. And, the resorts across the country have so much to offer. You’ve got the much-hyped city of Dubrovnik, of Game of Thrones fame, which lives up to its reputation with striking medieval architecture, scenery straight out of a storybook, and quaint alfresco cafés and bars to explore. Just north of Dubrovnik, there’s the Dalmatian Coast, with its spattering of small islands, each distinct from the other. Makarska is a top A-list spot, and the sleepy island of Brac combines laidback beaches with a mountainous backdrop. In the north of the country, there’s the Istrian Riviera , which lines up pine-backed beaches and historic towns. You can even take a day trip from here to Venice and tick off two countries in one trip.

Corfu is one of the cooler Greek islands during August, but still scorching hot, meaning it’s a great option for both families and those who want a relaxing beach holiday. This Aegean beauty is packed full of natural sights – think rolling green hills, olive trees and colourful flowers decorating white-washed buildings. You’ve got a mix of quiet resorts and lively towns to choose from, too. There’s neon-lit Kavos on the south coast of the island, which is packed full of bars, beaches and big-name clubs. In the east you’ve got the more low key and relaxed Aghios Ioannis which is a traditional family-friendly resort, with quiet beaches, traditional villages and a waterpark, too.

August is the perfect time to visit this Balkan gem, with both the average temperature and sea temperature being at their peak. The under-the-radar hotspot might not be the first destination to spring to mind when you think holiday, but it lines up everything you could want from a break – Blue Flag beaches, spectacular scenery, plenty of cultural and historic sights, and it’s fairly easy on the purse strings, too. You can enjoy a sun-soaked beach holiday at the Golden Sands resort near Varna and at Bulgaria’s big-name resort, Sunny Beach, near Nessebar. Or, if you’re after more of a sightseeing trip, pick Varna itself which packs in ancient monasteries, fortresses, and museums with unique exhibits like the oldest gold treasure in the world.

Stay at the Riu Palace Tikida Agadir and you’ll enjoy access to a private stretch of sand, plus a huge pool and two à la carte restaurants. Balmy evenings here can be spent dining on fresh seafood by the beach – perfect. Or, if you fancy a culture-packed trip, head to to Marrakech where you’ll see mesmerising snake charmers, and explore souks, stalls and a maze of tangled streets.
