What’s the difference between All Inclusive and Half Board?

Trying to book your next holiday and stuck between All Inclusive and Half Board? On paper, they both have perks – meals included is always a win. But between them, there’s a big difference in how much you’ll be whipping out your wallet while you’re away. Here’s the lowdown on both board bases so you can pick what actually works for you and your budget.

What does Half Board actually include?

Half Board means you get breakfast and an evening meal included – no lunch, no snacks and, usually, no drinks. It’s the best of both worlds, which means you get a lot of flex – if you’re gonna be out exploring during the day and love a local lunch, this could work for you. You don’t have to think about finding somewhere for breakfast when you wake up, you’ll come back to a meal waiting for you after a day out, and everything in between is up to you.

But… if you’re the kind of travel lover who likes to stay in your resort, chill by the pool with a cocktail and get the snacks in, Half Board probably isn’t for you.

What’s included with All Inclusive?

All Inclusive is basically your VIP pass. Pay one price when you book and meals, snacks and drinks – yep, even cocktails – are part of the deal. Breakfast, lunch and an evening meal in a buffet restaurant is pretty standard, but go for a more boujie resort and you might get à la carte service included. Plus, in most places you’ll usually get things like activities and entertainment thrown in, too. So, if your ideal day is hopping between the buffet, the beach and the bar without thinking about costs, All Inclusive is the one.

What about drinks and snacks?

Here’s the tea – Half Board doesn’t usually include drinks. Water might be included at dinner, but it’ll vary across resorts. So, you’ll need to pay for any alcoholic, soft or hot drinks you want. If you don’t fancy heading out for lunch or snacks, you can usually pay for them at the hotel, too.

On the other hand, All Inclusive normally covers unlimited local drinks like beer, wine and spirits, as well as soft drinks. Poolside snacks, ice-creams and things like sandwiches and hot dogs are usually included, too. Some higher-end resorts will throw in branded drinks, fresh smoothies and even barista-style coffee. Iconic.

Which one’s better value for money?

If you love a cocktail, trying new food and chilling poolside, All Inclusive is a no-brainer for your budget. The upfront price might be higher than if you picked a different board basis, but it can save you loads in the long run – especially if you’re in a destination where eating out adds up.

But, Half Board can be better value if you prefer being out and about, as you won’t be around to make the most of the free food. Or, if you don’t drink alcohol, because one of the biggest benefits of going all in is the unlimited bevs. Basically, Half Board’s a great base for you trip – it gives you a bit of structure without feeling like you have to spend your whole time at the hotel to get your money’s worth.

What’s not included in either?

Even if you go All Inclusive, not everything is free. Both options usually exclude:

  • Room service
  • Minibar
  • Excursions and activities off the resort
  • Premium drinks (unless specified)
  • À la carte restaurants (check if included in your All Inclusive tier)

Always check the small print before booking to swerve any surprises when you get there.
