Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic

POV: Your kids love a bit of SpongeBob and Dora the Explorer. This hotel is Nickelodeon themed, so if anything’s gonna turn their heads from the TV, it’s probably this. Plus, we’re talking Caribbean weather here. The Dominican Republic is a win for some winter sun in the Christmas hols. And, at this hotel, Santa’s bringing pyjama parties, character meet and greets and a whole waterpark. Check out Club Nick – part clubhouse, part artist’s studio – to take part in slime-making classes and noisy science experiments, then end up in the Plaza Orange auditorium, where there’s live music and dance-offs between their fave stars. It’s literally the stuff of childhood dreams.

There are eight different restaurants, so even the fussiest of eaters can find something, as well as places that cater to more sophisticated palates, too – yeah, there are burgers but you probably fancy some ceviche or a cocktail from the rum bar, right? While the kids are getting stuck into their latest activity, the spa is all yours… And, you’re right on your own private beach, with an infinity pool that comes with a swim-up bar, so there’s the stuff of grown-up’s dreams here, too.

Pickalbatros Jungle Aqua Park Resort Neverland, Egypt

A family holiday to Egypt is practically a history lesson… This hotel’s got a pool scene the kids will deffo not stop talking about. It’s home to Hurghada’s biggest waterpark, which means 81 slides and 47 pools. The rooms here are full-on bungalows, with a terrace or balcony, and plenty of space for big groups to stay together. Then, food-wise, they’ve thought of everything. There are 11 restaurants, from German places to Italian and Asian, and a weekly barbecue by the main pool. You don’t all have to pick the same thing either – the pagoda area is a spot anyone can grab a table at, so you can mix and match plates from different places. When one wants a pizza and the other wants a burger, there are no arguments here… There’s even a ‘dine around’ concept, which means you can check out the other three Neverland resorts and eat there, too.

Activities include beach volleyball, tennis and football but also video games, minigolf and chess. Near the main pool, you can take part in fitness classes like Zumba, as well as belly dancing and stretching sessions. Or, there are poolside massages available for some well-earned me-time. With a shuttle bus running to the beach, too, what else could you possibly need?

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun, Mexico

It’s all in the name… You already know this Mexico pick’s a winner in the water category. There’s a large waterpark with 14 slides, 2 lazy rivers and a pair of pools, as well as a couple of separate splash areas for little ones. If you upgrade to the Diamond Club™, there’s a bonus swim spot, too. Diamond guests also get three extra bars, but there are six open to all guests, including a couple of swim-up numbers. There’s even a wine bar that pairs your picks with gourmet dishes – okay, not one for the kids, but ideal for some adult time. The spa is seriously luxe. With a hydrotherapy circuit, massages and a plunge pool, and the gym puts on body combat classes or there’s sunrise yoga outside. Right next to the beach, sunbathing here comes with sea views and you can bump yourself to a swim-up room if you prefer more privacy.

Back to the kids… there’s a kids’ club split into two age groups for younger ones and teens. The sports bar lets you keep up with the latest games and there’s some sort of evening entertainment on seven days a week. There are 10 à la carte restaurants and a buffet to satisfy even the fussiest of foodies, serving up Mexican, Italian and steaks. They’re also great with dietaries! You can find dairy-free, gluten-free and vegetarian options easily or contact the hotel before to give them a heads-up.

Bahia Principe Fantasia Tenerife, Tenerife

The Canary Islands have always been a family fave for their year-round sun and budget rep. So, this hotel in Golf del Sur on Tenerife should be an easy go-to. As the name of the resort suggests, this area is a famous for its golfing scenes if there are any fans in your fam. The 27-hole course here comes with volcanic-sand bunkers and giant cacti. But in general, it’s a lovely quiet spot with a small rocky beach and the three sandy beaches of Los Cristianos only a 15-minute drive away.

Pick a family room or junior suite here and you get a lounge area for a bit more space, as well as a sofa-bed for sleepover club vibes. You’ve got four pools, with a grown-ups’ infinity spot to steal some time away from the kids, too. There’s also a couple of splash parks and a kids’ club to keep them entertained so you don’t have to. From film screenings, storytelling sessions and mini discos for the kids to DJ sets, live music and a theatre for a more mature crowd, it’s all on your doorstep. Plus, for a seven-night stay, you get two free shows at the theatre thrown in, so when they say All Inclusive, they mean it. The same goes for food – you get three à la carte dinners per week, or the buffet’s always there and just works for big families that all fancy something different.

AQI Aqua Mirage Club, Morocco

Morocco’s maybe not somewhere you’d thought of for a family holiday but here’s where you should book if your kids can handle the heat. This place is on the outskirts of Marrakech, so it’s just a 20-minute shuttle bus between you and the souks. But it also means you can dip in and out of the centre as much as you like, retreating back to the hotel for chill time and activities. The kids will deffo want to spend a decent amount of time at the hotel’s waterpark – the kamikaze and space bowl are big faves but there’s also a wave machine and splash zone for smaller babes. One of the two swimming pools is adults-only and has views of the Atlas Mountains if you fancy an afternoon off while the kids’ club does its job. Or, who doesn’t love a bit of karaoke? Check out the six tennis courts, some volleyball, football or Zumba – your whole itinerary can have organised fun written all over it.

In the evenings, pick a dance show or see some live music, and the scenery just screams out for a cocktail to end the day. There are some peaceful spots around the hotel where you can sip away or head to Barachicha if you’re all into the footie. And, the dinner options include your classic Moroccan, as well as Italian and a buffet.

These hotels are great on their own, but they’re even better when you get a free child place. Pay full price for two adults and your little one can go absolutely free – check out our free child place finder to get yours.
