Holidays to Estonia cover centuries-old cities, unblemished islands and a healthy dose of the great outdoors.
Estonia’s capital has worn many faces in its lengthy history. Its UNESCO-ticked old town was first given city status by the King of Denmark way back in the 13th century, and it spent more than half of the 20th under Soviet rule. You’ll still find plenty of throwbacks from bygone eras, such as the Medieval city walls and the Soviet-style tower blocks on the city’s fringes, but nowadays it’s one of the most digitally advanced places on the planet - so much so that in 2021, it was named the Best Destination for Remote Work in the world.
Most of the sightseers make a beeline for the mainland but scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find that this little corner of North-eastern Europe’s actually made up of a whole heap of islands – over 2,000 in fact. If you fancy a break from the crowds, you’ll be pleased to know that the majority are uninhabited. The rest are relatively untouched, too, and authentic Estonian experiences are far easier to come by here than in the main cities.
With more than 50% of the country covered by forest, it’s no surprise to know that the locals embrace the outdoor lifestyle. And thanks to its vast greenery, Estonia’s got the fourth-best air quality of any country on the planet. Just keep an eye out for brown bears, wolves and lynxes.
