Holidays to Puerto Rico are great for sandy beaches, shiny new shopping malls and fun-packed nightlife.

Gran Canaria’s suntra

Puerto Rico used to be a traditional fishing village but it had big plans. Now it’s a full-scale Canary Island resort on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria with a lively nightlife that offers up family-friendly fun. All the numbers add up too – the place has 3 shopping centres, 2 beaches and 1 very big reason to stay – it’s one of the sunniest spots on the island.

The beaches

The resort lines up a duo of manmade beaches. Hugging the horseshoe-shaped harbour is Puerto Rico Beach. It’s lined with sunloungers, and the water is nice and calm for kids. At the end of this stretch, you can pick up the coastal path that gets you to Amadores Beach in about 20 minutes. Or take the number 32 bus there if you don’t fancy a walk.

Mega malls

As a resort, Puerto Rico is quite spread out, but there are 3 malls here that are major nightlife zones. They’re crammed with pubs, bars and restaurants, so you won’t have to move around too much when you go out in the evening. And, being malls, the shops are here as well, which is handy.

Close to Las Palmas

Jump on a bus by the tourist info office and you’ll be at the island’s capital, Las Palmas, in under an hour. There’s a lot to get round here. The cathedral is a must. Afterwards, you’ve got museums, galleries and shops. And you should factor in time to tuck into tapas at one of the bustling restaurants.
