City breaks to Stockholm
City bugs should fly into Stockholm, Sweden’s capital. This place has got it all, from a treasure trove of museums and art galleries to an old town – Gamla Stan – that’s laced with spiralling alleyways. You’ll find a delicious foodie scene here, with cafés that serve net-fresh seafood, Swedish afternoon tea, and everything in between. And when you’re done with exploring on foot, chill out on a boat trip around the Stockholm Archipelago, 30,000 islands that border the city.
The midnight sun and polar nights
Sweden’s a country of Red Bull-style extremes, and this includes its natural phenomena. Zip north to places like Jokkmokk and Abisko for two wow-wee experiences – the midnight sun, and what’s locally known as polar nights. The latter’s what you need for your best chance of spotting the magical Northern Lights – dark skies, illuminated by ghostly green, red and purple light displays. The midnight sun’s all about those 24-hour days where the sun never sets, usually between May and July.
