Best same-sex wedding destinations

Getting married abroad? In the words of the Spice Girls, it’s time to spice up your life and don’t worry, we’re here to help. We know it isn’t always easy finding a destination that’s gonna let you stand queer, proud and loved up with your partner. And we also know that marriage can be a symbolic expression of your sexuality or gender identity. So, we’ve picked out some destinations that are known for their inclusivity and acceptance of same-sex weddings and ceremonies. Whether you’re looking for a vibrant ceremony somewhere that loves music and festivals as much as you do, or a calming retreat to say “I do” in peace, check out our picks below.

We know that not everyone in the community will self-identify as same-sex in their relationship or future elopement. So, if you are looking for a destination that might be suitable for a different ceremony or event, we always recommend checking out the government advice for LGBTQ+ travel.

Amsterdam

Category is… inclusive babe of a European capital city. And Amsterdam, hunny, you win. LGBTQ+ in the 21st century? Try the 19th century babe – that’s when homosexuality was decriminalised in the Netherlands and since then, Amsterdam has proved itself to be an in-demand ally city. Same-sex marriage has been legalised in the Netherlands since 2001, when the Mayor of Amsterdam married four homosexual couples himself. Thanks, your divaship ? So, if you are looking for a place to be here, queer and ready to marry, Amsterdam is the place.

But it’s not just “I do” in Amsterdam, as there is in fact a lot to do. The Netherlands are home to more queer neighbourhoods than ABBA fans in Soho on a Friday night – so, basically, endless options to celebrate with your friends, family or tribe. Ready to be the centre of attention at a queer party? Or just need to get away from that cousin’s small talk? Check out Reguliersdwarsstraat for the best selection of queer clubs and pubs in the heart of Amsterdam’s infamous nightlife scene. Another great spot for clubs, pubs and cafés is Kerkstraat – a historic street bursting with pride along the facades and interiors of every building. Cheers to that ?

Or maybe you might be looking to venture out a little from the buzz of Amsterdam’s centre or just need a refresher after your big day? Fairs. Why not check out Utrecht or Rotterdam? Whether you want to cycle on down the Rainbow Bike Path in Utrecht or visit Markthal in Rotterdam, you can be sure that you will be welcomed here with open arms for your special celebration.

Ibiza

Spain has been a hub for the queers for years and it’s not just the nudist beaches and the nightlife that keep them coming back. It’s their acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights and legalising of same-sex marriage since 2005 that lets you live your best life, even on your special day.

So, what’s our pick for same-sex weddings in Spain? Beefa, AKA Ibiza. Now, we know what you’re probably thinking. Do I really want to celebrate in the centre of a rowdy clubbing city? Well, there’s more to Ibiza than just this. The White Isle does weddings in style, with a choice of away-from it all resorts like Portinatx in the north, and die-hard party destinations like San Antonio further south. As far as venues go, you can pick from clifftop spots with widescreen ocean backdrops or feel the sand beneath your feet with a blessing on the beach. Plus, this being Ibiza, the wedding reception is well and truly sorted. Fancy an after-party at Amnesia, or something more low-key? The choice is yours.

If you’re thinking Ibiza for a same-sex marriage, one member of the relationship needs to be a Spanish citizen. If you’re still in the stages of searching for romance, why not check out our LGBTQ+ picks to Spain? Who knows who or what you’ll find on those magical shores…

Iceland

While you might need to ditch your hopes of a sleeveless outfit for your special day, having a cold heart is not in Iceland’s nature. This icy isle is regarded as one of the most accepting countries in the world (it features 3rd on the ILGA’s Rainbow Map rankings for inclusivity) and same-sex marriage has been legalised since 2010. With dreamy landscapes and a groovy capital, you’ll be glad you’re already there after the ceremony. Honeymoon? Got it sorted already, babe.

Picture the scene. You and your partner and wrapped up warm in your ski coats, ready for the outdoor wedding of your dreams. A picturesque scene behind you with the glaciers and whipping winds streaming across your face. Your family (or tribe of puffins on the shore) surrounding you, shivering, but overcome with joy. You tie the knot and then head to a black sandy beach for the reception of your dreams. Or why not ditch the wedding buffet for a cocktail and mud mask in the Blue Lagoon? Bin off the speeches for a soak in the hot springs. Maybe check out the KiKi Queer Bar and boogie on down the Rainbow Road in Reykjavik?

Greece

She’s a bit new to the allyship, with same-sex marriage being legalised in 2024, but there is no denying that she is one camp destination. Greece has been a destination that LGBTQ+ folk flock to year on year and it’s not just the Gyros that have them gagging for more…

Whether you want a helicopter entrance with flashmob dancing (cue the Cher music) or an intimate beach ceremony with your closest family or friends, Greece is the perfect place to celebrate your special day. Try an island, such as Crete or Mykonos, or you can pick a Blue Flag stretch. After something a bit quieter? Head to Halkidiki on the mainland for a pick and mix of sleepy fishing villages, pine-cloaked mountains and hidden coves that only the locals know about.

Sweden

Since 2009, same-sex couples have been able to marry and have the same rights as heterosexual couples in Sweden, making it the perfect place for same-sex marriages. According to statistics, over 12,000 same-sex couples have been married in Sweden since 2017. Get it Scandinavia ?

But it’s not just flatpacks, ABBA and meatballs with gravy in Sweden. They continually show up for the LGBTQ+ community through their commitment to rights and family allowances. With a mass of stately homes and idyllic countryside spots, such as the RånäsCastle, there is no doubt that you can live out your Bridgerton fantasy on your special day. And what’s better than one Duke? Two of course.

Costa Rica

Fancy getting further away from the UK for your wedding? A long-haul location worth adding to your shortlist has to be Costa Rica. Sure, it’s got all the essentials for a dreamy wedding in the sun. Textbook paradise beaches? Check. A-list luxury hotels? Done. The kind of photo backdrops that’ll be straight on the gram after the ceremony? Absolutely. But turn your back on the coast for a sec and you’ll find a flip side to Costa Rica. Cue white-water river rafting, jungle canopy zip-lining and volcanic crater hiking with the love of your life by your side. Adrenaline-seeker or cocktail-sipper? Here, you can be both.
