Wrapped in sprawling forests and lazy rivers, holidays to Arpora line up a taste of old-school Goa.
This chilled out village dishes up a slice of traditional India. It’s snuggled by lofty palm trees, and the soundtrack’s mainly made up of swishing rice paddies and birdsong, with the random hum of a rickshaw. At its centre, you’ll find the whitewashed chapel of St Sebastian.
A market leader
Arpora comes alive every Saturday – it’s home to one of the biggest markets in the country. Known as ‘Mackies Saturday Night Bazaar’, the market attracts locals and tourists alike, who come to barter for spices, fabrics, incense, and more. When you’re not shopping, you can turn your attention to the performances up on the central stage, or try the street food on for size.
Nearby Calangute’s a livewire, offering up legendary nightlife. But the real star of the show’s the beach – it’s a butter-coloured stretch that’s popular with both jetsetters and backpackers, thanks to the border of beach shacks, easy swimming spots, and wild watersports. Best of all, it’s just a 20-minute walk from Arpora.
