Navam Perahera

The streets of Colombo come alive in February each year for the two-night cultural festival, Navam Perahera. It’s a real spectacle, as performers march through the capital, accompanied by brightly-dressed elephants. They’re also joined by stilt-walkers, drummers and conch shell-blowing locals. It’s not just tourists who make the trip to watch – Sri Lankans turn out in their thousands. The festival finishes with costumed dancers showing off their different styles – expect Kandy, low country and Sabaragamu routines.
