If you’re planning a trip to Cancun in Mexico and want the perfect blend of beachside luxury, cultural sightseeing and seriously mouth-watering food – this guide has you covered. From relaxing spa moments to bustling markets and late-night dancing, here’s how to spend each day in paradise…
Day 1 – arrive and unwind
I flew from London Gatwick to Cancun International Airport and was so ready to ease into this tropical escape. After I landed, I headed straight to the Hard Rock Hotel Cancun, where I was staying this week – it’s a buzzing All Inclusive resort right on the beach, which I highly recommend you book, too. Check in, order some room service (the menu includes comfort classics and local Mexican bites), and take this first evening to completely relax. Travelling across time zones can take it out of you – so get some rest and get ready for the adventure ahead.
Day 2 – content creation and local delights
Start your day with breakfast at the hotel’s buffet – you can expect fresh fruit, pastries, omelettes and local favourites like chilaquiles. The whole place is perfect for capturing content, so ofc I spent my morning getting some pics to show you guys. With ocean views, a stunning pool area and a dramatic beachfront, the Hard Rock is ideal for cool drone footage and Insta-worthy moments. Don’t miss the swim-up bar and you have to make time for a slice of pizza from the stone-baked oven near the pool.
In the afternoon, head offsite for a bit of self-care at Amar Nail Spa where you can treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure. After that, stop by Soriana Hiper, a large supermarket that’s popular with the locals, and pick up some Mexican snacks and drinks – think spicy crisps and sweet tamarind candies, as well as colourful bottles of Jarritos. In the evening, book a hibachi dinner at the hotel’s Japanese restaurant for a fiery and fun dining experience. Then, naturally, head to the bar for a couple of cocktails before calling it a night.
Day 3 – explore Playa del Carmen
After breakfast, take a day trip to Playa Del Carmen, a lively town around an hour from Cancun and take a stroll down Quinta Avenida, the main strip filled with street performers, boutique shops and food stalls. While you’re there, stop for some Caribbean food with a visit at two Jamaican-owned restaurants – Ferron’s and Roots Jamaican Kitchen. Both offer authentic flavours like jerk chicken, rice and peas and plantain – it’s a taste of home, even though you’re miles away from it. Also, don’t miss Zo’Zen frozen yoghurt for a sweet, cooling treat. Then, you can head back to the hotel to grab a drink and settle in for a relaxed evening.
Day 4 – shopping, spa and seaside vibes
I find it nice to start some of my days away with a workout at the hotel gym to keep up my routine. So, get your sweat on and then fuel up with another satisfying breakfast. Next, head over to Riu Caribe, a nearby resort that’s known for its beachside parties and social energy – perfect for a fun afternoon break from your home base.
Later, you can explore La Isla Shopping Village, which is a luxury open-air mall that’s perched alongside a lagoon. Here you’ll find premium brands like Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Sephora and more. Whether you’re shopping for fashion or fragrances, it’s a great place to treat yourself or pick up some gifts to take back home.
Before heading back to your hotel, grab a scoop of Häagen-Dazs ice cream (the coconut flavour is especially tropical). Once back at the Hard Rock, indulge in a full body massage at the spa, then take a dip in the ocean to rinse off and unwind. A super nice way to end the day is with a delicious Italian dinner at one of the resort’s à la carte restaurants.
Day 5 – resort-hopping and premium dining
After your usual morning routine, take a day to explore more of Cancun’s luxury hospitality scene. Nearby, you’ve also got Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa and AVA Resort Cancun that both have a unique take on quiet, upscale escapes. Go check them out or maybe they’re more your vibe as a place to stay. Taking note of other resorts while you’re away is a great way to get inspiration for future trips.
In the evening, keep it classic with a hearty dinner at the Hard Rock’s steakhouse. The meat is well-cooked, the sides are super indulgent, and the atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between laidback and luxe.
Day 6 – ancient wonders and a night out
Get ready for a full day of history and adventure with a guided tour to Chichen Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This activity can be booked with First Choice Experiences, which makes your life so much easier. You’ll start with a visit to a traditional Mayan village, followed by a swim in a cenote – a natural sinkhole with cool, clear waters. Then, you get to explore the ancient ruins of Chichen Itza. The iconic pyramid, El Castillo, is awe-inspiring in real life, and there’s plenty to learn about the site’s deep cultural significance.
Back in Cancun, you should try dinner at Taboo, a high-end restaurant known for its fusion of Mediterranean and Mexican flavours. Then, head out to Coco Bongo – part show, part nightclub, and fully unforgettable.
Day 7 – tacos and a boat party
Spend your morning on the beach soaking up the final rays. Then, get ready for the best taco tour, consisting of the best places I tried when I was there. Start with Tacos Tola for traditional, no-fuss tacos that are packed with flavour. Then, move on to Pollos El Primo, known for their grilled chicken tacos with just the right amount of spice.
In the afternoon, it’s time to dance on the water at the Hip Hop Sessions Boat Party. With great music, flowing drinks and ocean views, it’s one of the most memorable ways to experience Cancun’s energy.
Wrap up the night with a final drink at the hotel bar and toast to your second-to-last evening in the sun.
Day 8 – last bites and souvenirs
On your final day, continue your taco journey with part two of my highlights tour… Visit Lonch & Tacos Lupita, a hidden gem with big flavours, and La 4:13 Taqueria, which adds a modern twist to street-style tacos.
Before heading home, swing by Walmart for some last-minute souvenir shopping. Look for local spices, sauces, snacks and mini bottles of tequila – perfect for gifts or a taste of Mexico back in London. Then, it’s time to pack up, check out and head to the airport with unforgettable memories, a full camera roll and probably a suitcase full of snacks.
