Not all of us are blessed with unlimited annual leave 🥲 So, rationing your days off is a reality we all have to face. But that doesn’t mean saying no to trips – we could never… We just have to plan them smarter.
PSA: Bank holidays are your builtin loophole. They turn tiny amounts of leave into big chunks of holiday time. And, bring back the long weekend! Short breaks can be anything from two to four whole days away and you’ll be surprised at the amount you can see and do in that time. So, here’s our guide for how to live your best holiday life with limited annual leave…
Make the most of bank holidays
9 days away for 4 days of leave
Pick a week with a bank holiday Monday, book Tuesday to Friday off, and suddenly you’ve unlocked nine full days to play with. That’s two weekends, one bank holiday and only four precious days of leave gone.
4 days away for 1 day of leave
If you just need a quick reset, take the bank holiday long weekend and add one weekday – usually the Tuesday. It’s the easiest way to stretch a long weekend into something that actually feels like a holiday.
3 days away using 0 leave
Sometimes you want a getaway without touching your allowance at all. That’s what bank holiday Mondays are for. Fly out Saturday, wander somewhere new on Sunday, and enjoy your bonus Monday off for free. This is where that 6am outbound flight really pays off…
Why short breaks are great value
Short trips can feel just as rewarding as a full week away – without the big spend. You’re paying for fewer nights, fewer meals and fewer taxis, but still getting those core holiday memories.
They also slot perfectly into bank holiday weeks and lastminute windows, which means you don’t need to commit big money or big time to get away.
Top 5 short breaks that work with limited annual leave
These five destinations deliver maximum weekend energy – loads to do, great food, easy exploring and plenty of personality. Each one is easily doable for a long weekend or bank holiday escape, so you can get a proper getaway without draining your leave balance.
1. Milan, Italy
Milan is all polished piazzas, high fashion and aperitivo hours. Start at the city’s star, the Duomo – towering, super ornate and perfect for getting that firstday “wow” moment. Wander through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, dip into designer stores, or hit the side streets for local boutiques and chic cafés.
Into football? Book a stadium tour at the iconic San Siro. Prefer things slower? Grab a spritz as the sun sets and just enjoy some of the most stylish people-watching ever. Milan is compact and easy to explore, too, making it ideal for a 48-72hour escape when leave is tight.
2. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is all colour, canals and cool design. You’ve got Christiansborg Palace and Rosenborg Castle for your history fix, plus the Museum of Copenhagen, which shows off centuries of stories – including Viking artefacts more than 800 years old. Add in a retro theme park that’s been pulling in crowds since 1843 (Tivoli Gardens), and your itinerary pretty much writes itself.
Top tip – if you don’t fancy doing the research yourself, just steal our 72 hours in Copenhagen itinerary.
Everything’s made for walking or cycling, so you can pack loads into your weekend without spending half your time on transport.
3. Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is big on atmosphere – thermal spas, riverside strolls and sunsets that look like they could have been edited. Over in Buda, you’ve got the postcard classics like Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion. Then, Pest is where the cafés, bars and boulevards are buzzing.
If you want a moment that’ll stay with you, hop on a Danube sunset cruise and watch Parliament light up for the night. And if you like a bit of structure, First Choice Experiences offer things like wine tastings and historianled tours, so you can see more without the planning stress.

4. Lisbon, Portugal
Think Lisbon, think steep hills and tiled buildings that are made for your Insta feed. Tick off São Jorge Castle for the city views, drift through the boutiques and cafés in Chiado – home to its famous roofless church – and end your day with music and nightlife in Bairro Alto.
Your musteat moment? A pastel de nata from Pasteis de Belém. It’s iconic for a reason and only a short ride from the centre.

5. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is the perfect have-it-all short break. Beaches for lazy mornings, tapas bars for long lunches, and Gaudí masterpieces everywhere you look – starting with the Sagrada Família. If you fancy earning your views, head up the city trails for panoramas over the skyline, sea and even the Olympic stadium.
For shopping and culture, wander Passeig de Gràcia or dive into the artisan boutiques of El Born. And if you love a bargain, Encants Market is one of Europe’s oldest flea markets – ideal for finding something unique without trying too hard.
