Superb seafront
The recipe’s pretty straightforward in Monte Gordo – a hefty dollop of honey-coloured sand, topped with a sprinkling of modern hotels and a side of seafood restaurants. The sands roll out all the way to the Spanish border, which is a five-minute trundle away, on the other side of the Guadiana River. You’ll find the nearest neighbour, Vila Real de Santo António, here – this traditional Portuguese town is modelled on a portion of the capital, Lisbon, so it’s like chalk and cheese with modern Monte Gordo. Nature buffs get their wildlife fix in a reserve 10 minutes’ drive away, where chameleons and flamingos bowl up at different times of year.
