Hogueras de San Juan

Hogueras de San Juan, which translates as the Bonfires of St John, is celebrated across the Valencian region. It has links to the summer solstice and in Calpe locals head to the beach to light bonfires and share food and drink. Later in the evening, a street party kicks off in Placa Colon, near the sea-facing promenade. You might spot other bonfires around the streets, including the burning of furniture and old knick-knacks beside one of the chapels. Alicante hosts the biggest version of the festival, and you can reach the city by car in under an hour.
