Tenerife – for fidgety families

Whether your ideal half term holiday is all about building sandcastles on the beach, hiking through pine forests or riding the white-knucklers at theme parks, this Canary Island has got the lot. Because of that, it’s a great choice for families who like to get out and explore. Hotel-wise, you’ve got tonnes of great family-friendly options, from big All Inclusive resorts to smaller spots by the sea.

For ultimate fun, there’s Villa Mandi and Siam Park. Not only does this place have a kids’ club and its own stellar swimming scene, but it also comes with free access to big-name waterpark Siam Park. Now you wouldn’t get that in the school playground.

St Lucia – for relaxation-ready families

St Lucia might have a reputation as a hotspot for honeymooners, but it’s got a hidden knack for family holidays up its sleeve, too. There’s plenty of elbow room on this island’s typically tropical beaches and they’re ideal for catching some winter sun. It’s a nine-hour flight to get to St Lucia, but the sandy stretches are worth it.

Opt for a stay at the Bay Gardens Hotel, which is close to Rodney Bay’s seafront, and you can take advantage of the free bus down to the beach. Plus, best of all, the price tag’s family friendly, too.

Fuerteventura – for all-ages families

If you’ve got lots of different ages (and personalities) in your group, Fuerteventura is the place for you. Yes, this Canary Island is home to 150-odd beaches to relax on, but it’s also the kind of place where activities are on offer around every corner. Go on a 4×4 off-road tour, exploring volcanic craters and rugged wildlife, or hop on board a pirate ship and cruise along the coast spotting dolphins – there are experiences for everyone.

Hotel-wise, stay close to all the action at the Hotel Chatur Costa Caleta. It’s just a 10-minute walk from the beach and even closer to local shops and restaurants. That said, there’s no need to escape the hotel – there are four pools for all ages, plus a kids’ club and sports courts.

Cyprus – for history-loving families

School might be out, but if your lot are still keen to keep learning, then Cyprus is right up your street. This island is the mythological birthplace of Greek goddess Aphrodite, but that’s just the start of its ancient credentials. Head to the Paphos Archaeological Park to spot the UNESCO-accredited Tombs of the Kings and a host of other historical gems. Plus, if you get tired of exploring, Cyprus’ set of 60-odd Blue Flag beaches are ideal for putting your feet up. With temperatures hovering in the teens at this time of year, it’s toastier than it is at home, but still cool enough to comfortably see the sights.

Head to the Coral Beach Hotel and Resort, made for families who don’t like to sit still. There’s a giant lagoon pool – plus an activity pool complete with water slides – as well as sports courts, evening entertainment and art classes to sign up to. Put those traditional Cypriot skills to the test with a session on basket-making or silk painting, to name a few.
