Can’t afford Japan this spring? Try these cherry blossom dupes instead

Say goodbye to winter’s dark mornings and get ready for things to get a serious glow-up. Yes, spring is here, which means brighter days are coming, and flower season is in full bloom 🌸 The world’s looking pretty – and trust us, you’ll want in.

Everyone knows Japan’s cherry blossom season – AKA Sakura. For a few weeks each spring, the whole country is covered in pastel pink. Think petals drifting through temple gardens, lining riversides and turning city parks into reallife postcards. It’s iconic for a reason.

Dreamy? Absolutely. Crowded (and pricey)? Definitely. Your heart is saying yes, but your bank balance isn’t quite on the same page. That’s where our cherry blossom destination dupes come in 🤝 Same look, different price. You might be thinking, ‘where can I see beaut blossoms without going to Japan?’ Spoiler – they’re all under four hours away 👀 So, give Europe some love this spring with our top cherry blossom dupes below…

Benidorm, Spain

You might think Benidorm’s all about golden beaches and big nights out, but head inland a little and you hit one of Spain’s prettiest spring moments – almond blossom season. From late January into March, picture the Costa Blanca countryside turning soft pink and white, with whole valleys blooming at once. It’s not Sakura, but it delivers the same dreamy vibe. Think long scenic strolls, blossom-filled backdrops and warm, sunny weather that kicks in way earlier than the UK.

Jalón Valley is where you’ll want to be for one of the best places to see it. Hundreds of almond trees burst into bloom and line the walking paths through cute villages like Alcalalí and Xaló. The romantic scenes of pink and white stretch back to a Moorish legend where a Sultan planted thousands of almond trees, so their snowywhite blooms would remind his homesick queen of winter back home. Today, the whole valley still blushes pink and white every spring.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Amsterdam hits the mark all year round when it comes to a city break. From history, art and culture to canalside strolls and quirky cafés – this city ticks all the boxes. But when spring hits, the whole place levels up. From midApril to early May, tulip season is this city’s big moment. You’ll find floating flower stalls and colourful displays all over the city centre. For the real show, pick between Bollenstreek’s rainbow tulip fields (basically a real-life painting) and Keukenhof Gardens – one of the world’s largest flower displays. Everywhere you turn, there’s a different scene: bold gardens, sculpture trails, glasshouses and peaceful woodland paths.

If you’re chasing that ‘everything just turned pink’ moment, don’t worry – Amsterdam delivers on that, too. From late March to early April, Amsterdamse Bos sees around 400 cherry trees bloom – the closest you’ll get to Japan’s ‘Hanami’ moment in Europe. This centuries-old Japanese tradition is all about appreciating life’s beauty and living in the moment. The vibe here matches it perfectly – you’ll find people relaxing under the blossom enjoying laidback picnics and snapping golden-hour pics.

Istanbul, Turkey

Spring in Istanbul is a whole aesthetic on its own. The city sits right where Europe meets Asia – and honestly, it feels like it – with skyline views that mix mosques, palaces and waterside cafés. When the weather warms up, everything softens… the Bosphorus sparkles, rooftop terraces fill up and trees across the city turn the dreamiest blush pink. You’ll spot cherry blossoms dotted around Istanbul from late March to early April, especially in big leafy parks. Both sides of the water get their glow-up, and the blossom works so well against the city’s historic backdrop of domes, minarets and waterfront mansions. It’s not the major Sakura moment you get in Japan, but the vibe is definitely there.

If cherry blossom is the warm-up, then Judas trees are the headline act. These deep pink and purple blooms are the spring colour of Istanbul, and they absolutely transform the city. Picture pretty blooms lining the hills, the parks and – most famously – the Bosphorus, where the purple flowers spill down towards the water. It’s seriously stunning.

Bonn, Germany

If you’re after a proper ‘wait… am I in Japan?’ moment without going too far, this next pick sounds like a bit of you. Take a trip to Bonn in Western Germany and watch the whole place transform into one of Europe’s most iconic pink tunnels. When April hits, neighbourhoods in the Old Town erupt into full bloom – blossom-covered branches arching overhead, petals floating down like confetti and streets buzzing with people.

The most popular spots are Heerstraße and Breite Straße. These picture-perfect lanes go viral every year, and it’s easy to see why. The cherry trees grow into a full-on canopy, so strolling through them feels like you’re stepping into a fairytale. It’s one of the closest spots in Europe that matches Japan’s Sakura tunnel. Beyond the blossoms, spring is a great time to explore the rest of the city. Think cute cafés, riverside walks along the Rhine and colourful street art hiding in leafy neighbourhoods. What’s not to love?

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is giving main character energy with sun-drenched coastlines, volcanic landscapes and unreal food… it’s the whole package. But don’t sleep on this stunning island in spring – as winter lets go of southern Sicily, the ancient landscape surrounding Agrigento transforms into something pretty special. Enter almond blossom season. From late January into early March, orchards across the island burst into fluffy white and pink bloom. The most famous spot is the Valley of the Temples, where the blossoms frame ancient Greek ruins – a backdrop so good it feels straight out of a film.
