Cavadee Festival

This religious ceremony is performed throughout the island. At Trou d’Eau Douce, the local Tamil Indians gather at the Gothic church. Dressed in pink and wreathed with flowers, young girls and women make their sacrifice to Muruga by being pricked with needles. The men have their cheeks, tongues and chests pierced before dragging altars on their backs through the town. It concludes with a fire-walking ceremony.
