Holidays to Balaia on the Algarve serve up Blue Flag beaches, award-winning golf, and plenty of day trip options.
An under-the-radar resort
Balaia isn’t one for hogging the limelight – it’s hidden away between the livelier resorts of Albufeira and Vilamoura on Portugal’s Algarve coast. Golfers have known about this place for years – they just forgot to let everyone else know about its dinky terracotta-tiled houses and easy access to the rest of the area. Oh, and that it’s got 2 of the best beaches around.
A duo of beaches
Balaia’s double act of sandy beaches are both Blue Flag winners. On the main beach there are sunloungers, watersports and a couple of beach bars. Then on the other side of the rocks you’ve got quieter option, Maria Luisa. This one’s backed up by jagged cliffs but not much else, so a picnic and towels are in order.
Balaia has nabbed itself an award-winning 9-hole golf course that comes with a clifftop setting. The course takes in rolling green countryside and lots of beach views. There’s a putting green and driving range for practice runs, and budding Tiger Woods can get a professional tutor to show them the ropes.
Getting around the Algarve
The Algarve’s not a big place and Balaia is right in the middle of it – so it’s a great jump-off point for daytrips. Ten minutes down the coastal road gets you to the traditional fishing villages of Olhos d’Agua and Alvor. And 20 minutes the other way, there’s Albufeira – it might be famous for its nightlife but it’s got a cathedral and ruined castle, too.
