Goa Carnival

This pre-Lent festival has been celebrated in Goa since the 18th century. It’s got its roots in Goa’s Portuguese past, but alongside the Christian elements of the celebrations, you’ve also got Hindu influences. The main parade’s in Panjim, an hour’s drive from Varca Beach, but this procession of brightly coloured floats – festooned with performers – makes its way through all the major cities. Plus, you’ll find smaller celebrations to join in with all over Goa. Dancers, fire-eaters and musicians come together to make the festivities a pretty spectacular sight.
