Holidays to Bavaro serve up a luxury Caribbean beach resort that’s ideal for diving and snorkelling – or just kicking back on the palm-lined beach.
White sands and swim-up bars
One good reason to choose this glam resort on the Dominican Republic’s east coast is that it dishes up some of the country’s best hotels. These retreats lay on plenty of luxurious extras, like swim-up bars, spas and watersports. But the real treat here is one that money can’t buy – a 10-kilometre strech of white-sand backed by coconut palms and mangrove forests.
Bavaro’s 10-kilometre-long beach is the stuff of legends. The sand’s so fine it’ll slip through your fingers, while the water is bluer than the pool. Watersports fans will find they’re well catered for, while those seeking R’n’R are sorted for loungers and palm-thatched umbrellas. And for snacks and drinks, try the colourful shacks dotted along the sands.
Golf and tennis
There’s plenty to do away from the beach. Many hotels have tennis courts, but if you’re more of a golf fan, try the 18-hole course at the Iberostar Bavaro Golf Club. You can rent everything you’ll need at the pro shop. And talking of pros, look out for local young talent Diancady Santana Mota, who plays here.
Daytrips to the Del Este National Park
Much of this national park is unspoiled jungle, home to more than 100 types of bird. You’ve also got caves to explore, where you can see drawings by the island’s first inhabitants, the Taino. Remember to take a packed lunch and plenty of water – it gets hot here. The park’s just over an hour from the resort.
