With a Greek-style meze of islands to choose from, 6,000 in total, deciding which Greek Island is best for your getaway can be a bit overwhelming. Only 227 of these islands are inhabited, which narrows it down a little. But we think we can do better than that. Have a look at our handy guide, and see which Greek Island is best for you…

    Best for beach lovers

If you’re a sucker for sea and sand, all our Greek islands have something up their sleeves. You’ve got the likes of Zante’s famous Shipwreck Beach, and St Paul’s Bay, in Rhodes. But we reckon that Kefalonia’s a bit of a jewel in Greece’s beachy crown. Its biggest-name spot is Myrtos Beach, a cliff-backed scoop of sand on the island’s north coast. Plus, it played a starring role in Hollywood mega-hit, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Stays in Skala put a sandy spot right on your doorstep, too. This fishing village boasts a three kilometre-long, Blue Flag waving beach. Now that’s got to be worth a heart-eyes emoji.

    Best for history buffs

Greece is a bit of a go-to for culture vultures, and Crete’s got historical sites in spades. Make sure you put the Palace of Knossos – known as Europe’s oldest city – at the top of your to-do list. For easy access, stay in Amoudara, Heraklion, which is a 20-minute drive away. What’s more, after a long day of sightseeing, you can cool off at the Atlantica Akti Zeus Hotel. This on-the-beach joint is kitted out with a double whammy of a waterpark and pools. Or, for a Venetian historical heavyweight, plant your flag in Aghios Nikolaos. From here, it’s easy to hop on a boat and spend the day exploring spooky Spinalonga island, which has plenty of stories to tell.
