Lake Como
Holidays to the Dolomites have got soaring peaks, alpine meadows and lush valleys – all up as far north as you can go in Italy.
The scenery's the star of this UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Italy, where saw-like ridges clash dramatically against the skyline and sheer cliffs drop down into the valleys below. It looks great all hours of the day – but you'll want to look out for the 'Alpenglow' hour around sunset and sunrise, when the 18 peaks turn the colour of candyfloss.
Come equipped with a bike or just your boots – no matter which you choose, you'll be able to enjoy the natural wonder of flower-filled fields and mountain-top views. In the summer, lifts are the simplest way to get to the top of the peaks, while hiking fans can tackle high-altitude paths known as the 'alte vie'.
The Dolomites' mountain scenery is hard to beat, but other beauty spots nearby are also not to be missed. Head to the Brenta Dolomites woods for the Vallesinella waterfalls, relax by Lake Levico or just meander your way through pretty villages. If you need to refuel, take your pick from three regional cuisines – Italian, Austrian and Ladin.
